iPhone calendar notifications not working

My iPhone calendar app fails to notify me of repeating calendar entries.

I read on the Apple Support webpage that there is a limit on calendar entries (50,000) and I think that may be causing it.

Is there a quick and simple way to purge my calendar of old entries to create space? Going back and manually deleting will take weeks!
