AppleTV 4K - Dolby Vision Issue with LG A2 Series OLED TV

Wondering if anyone has any advice on how to permanently solve the following issue while retaining the use of 4K Dolby Vision? I am not sure if this is a AppleTV issue, or is my LG TV is at fault?

TV: LG (A2 Series) OLED77A2PUA with latest firmware v33.22.95

Apple TV 4K (2nd generation): Video settings Match Content & Match Frame Rate are both off, video format is set to 4K Dolby Vision @ 60hz.

I am using legit Belkin UltraHD HDMI 2.1 Cables (have swapped out cables and tried all HDMI ports on the TV and issue persists....)

When turning on my AppleTV (which turns on my TV) about 90% of the time the TV screen will within ~2 seconds go solid black (literally solid black, audio works, but no video) when it automatically switches on Dolby Vision (I see the Dolby Vision icon flash in the upper right of the TV, then the screen goes solid black).

This issue requires me to use the LG A2 TV remote to switch back and forth between the AppleTV input and the LG TV home screen in order to get stable viewable video output to stay on using the AppleTV. This process often repeats up to 4 times (Dolby Vision icon flash, screen goes black) before the AppleTV video becomes stable (does not go solid black) on Dolby Vision.

LG (A2 Series) OLED77A2PUA

That seems to be a 2022 model, that has HDMI 2.0 ports. Then the Apple TV settings must ensure that the HDMI signal stays under the HDMI 2.0 limits of ~18 Gbps.

Verify that you set Apple TV to YCbCr color space and chroma subsampling of 4:2:0 or 4:2:2. All streaming video will have 4:2:0 chroma anyway, so this will not appear any less compared to 4:4:4 (for HDMI 2.1). Else 4:4:4 is only supported for SDR.

If the HDMI port on the TV (to which you connect for this) allows for configuration, then set it accordingly. I think LG refers to HDR options in 4K as ‘Deep Color’.

I have the same setup and have dealt with this problem for months.

The standard fix is to set your resolution to 4K SDR and enable match content for dynamic range, which will start up the LG without Dolby Vision but switch to Dolby Vision when playing supported content. However, this setting causes a brief blink as it switches before video playback. If this doesn’t bother you, it should resolve your issue.

Currently, I’m testing a new solution by disabling quick start in the LG TV’s WebOS settings on my A2. I hope that this adjustment will lead to a proper HDMI handshake at startup between the Apple TV and LG, helping to avoid the Dolby Vision black screen issue. 🤞🏾

Try this out and let’s troubleshoot together. I can’t go back to the standard 4K HDR or the match content setting on the Apple TV, as these cause the “blinking” when switching dynamic range modes before the video begins. (First world problems, I know!)

Thanks for the info! Ok so here is what I found;

  1. When the AppleTV is set to 4k Dolby Vision, I do not see the option to change its video settings (colorspace & chroma) via the HDMI Output sub menu. Per --> Change video settings on Apple TV 4K - Apple Support
  2. On my LG TV, HDMI Deep Color is disabled in the menu (meaning I suppose that the AppleTV 4K I have connected does not support that option...)

Any ideas?

What's odd is I have two other LG C2 series TV's that are also hooked up to a AppleTV 4K and do not exhibit the same behavior as the A2 with the AppleTV 4K.

Yes, right now I am also living with the brief black screen when content is being negotiated over and over ***!

Interesting theory on Quick Start, I will try that too.

If you’re Black and live in the Northeast, we might have been separated at birth! (assuming consumer electronic buying habits are genetic!)

I also have a couple of C2s with Apple TV 4K of various generations and don’t have the same issue. I think the A-series has a different HDMI controller chip, and there’s clearly some incompatibility between the Apple TV and LG A-series.
