How do I set a 'second choice default' card in Apple Pay?

I have an Amex card but Amex isn’t accepted everywhere. I’ve seen suggestions that if you open the Wallet app you can change the priority order of cards by ordering the cards you want to use first at the front of the stack. This never works for me when my default card is unavailable. Apple Pay just defaults to my oldest registered card irrespective of order in the stack. Can I request of Apple a tightly defined ‘second choice default’ option in the wallet settings rather than implied definition from the stack order which seems flaky?

Hi Phil. I’ve encountered swiping right to the front of the stack as a method of changing my default card. It’s kind of you to point out that there is no second choice default.

With no second default choice, after double clicking the side button it will bring up the Default Card and you would swipe to choose another card. That can also be done after an Apple Pay transaction had been declined on the Default Card just by double clicking again and choosing another.

Those are the 2 choices.

There is no "second choice default".

You can only get one default.

Changing the stack order in the Wallet app and replacing the card at the front of the stack with a different one, will in fact change the default card to the new one.

You can confirm this by double tapping the sleep button after you make the chan ge to being up Apple Pay, and it should now show the newly set card.

Thanks Jeff. However, it’s not that I do not *want* to use the default. It’s that where Amex is not an accepted payment method, the payment method defaults to another card. Over which I have no control. I know I can change which payment method I would like to use by selecting from my other cards. However it would be nice to have this card that appears when Amex is not accepted be one of my choosing. The card that always comes up is a card I only use for overseas travel. Almost every time it’s not what I would use if Amex is not accepted.
