Disable Purple dot and Yellow dot for screen and microphone recording

Please let me remove the purple dot for screen recording. I am using DisplayLink to connect to external monitors. I accept that it is recording my screen to let me use my external monitors - now please go away.

Sonoma killed YellowDot... why did I update?

I think that's a facet of the docking station, then.

I've frequently used external monitors, via HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt, and I've never seen the dot, when using either extended desktop or mirroring.

Assuming your dock uses this, it does look like DisplayLink does, in fact, use screen recording to manage a virtual display interface... therefore I'm going to say 100% it's down to the way their software is working, and not a fault of the OS, per se.

As far as the OS is concerned, your screen is being recorded, and that's why the dot is there, just in case you didn't want/know/expect that.

I have left product feedback - thank you D.I. Johnson.

For now it seems like my current options to overcome this are:

  • Downgrade MacOS and cease future updates until MacOS provides an option to disable the Yellow and Purple dots or;
  • Use a thin piece of blackout tape over the screen to hide the control panel and purple dot

This is a major issue for me because I find the dots exceedingly distracting and I do not plan on ceasing to use my external monitors.

Truly a Vorhandenheit moment for Apple.

I have to trust DisplayLink drivers - they are what my docking station uses. Their API records the screen - not sure why - but that's the solution they have come up with to let me use two external monitors. Is my gripe with DisplayLink's implementation? I don't think so.

It seems reasonable to want to watch a movie on my beautiful macbook retina screen and keep my external monitors stay plugged in without a persistent pesky purple dot in the corner interrupting the film.

I don't need to be persistently reminded DisplayLink is recording my screen - and providing user choice such as an option to trust certain apps or accept risks seems a reasonable position.

To each their own, but I'm pretty sure Apple will tell you there are far more people out there who feel better off knowing that their microphone is listening, and their camera is recording (or, maybe more precisely, feel better knowing that they are not recording because there's no colored pixel to indicate recording in progress).

The only people who might argue against this are those that want to record surreptitiously, and you, apparently.
