How to recover photos from a wiped iPhone 17 Pro Max after a failed update?

My phone 17 pro max tried to do an update on Saturday evening. This resulted in the device crashing and totally wiping. I’ve lost all photos from that day when I set my phone back up - is there any way of retrieving them? It was my daughter’s first birthday party so I’m devastated that they’re gone.

I'm afraid that it sounds like there's nothing that can be done. I'm guessing that you're not using iCloud Photos, is that right? If you used iCloud Photos, then there would be a copy of the pictures at iCloud.com almost immediately after you took them. iCloud Photos isn't really a backup, exactly, but it does work in situations like this.

Otherwise, if the phone crashed before a backup, then there's really no place else for the pictures to be.

My pictures usually get copied to iCloud within minutes, but that depends on how much free storage I have, how busy the phone is doing other stuff, power, and wifi. I'm beginning to see free storage as a really big factor-- we need to keep at least 10% free to have reasonable service.
