Streaming Apps (Disney, Prime, Netflix) won’t Airplay from iPhone to ATV.

ATV HD (4th Gen) - tvOS 26.2

iPhone 13 - iOS 18.6.2

Hi folks.

As above. I get either a red ‘No’ 🚫 symbol in the bottom left of the TV. Or the video just constantly buffers on the iPhone and TV screen but nothing plays.

Videos & photos in the photo library on the iPhone will Airplay just fine. As does screen mirroring. So the hardware connection appears fine. I’ve tried with Peer - Peer on & off on the ATV.

Any ideas?

I have a feeling it’s to do with DRM blocking the airplay. But the ATV & iOS meet the minimum requirements for the streaming apps. Why would they build Airplay into their iOS apps if they just blocked 100% of the content from playing?

Really frustrating as we can’t get home internet. So I need to download content when on WiFi at work or families homes. With the idea of streaming via AirPlay at home.

I had patchy success before I updated the ATV from tvOS 18 to 26 last week. Could this have killed the functionality?

Desperate for a solution! Thanks.

Content providers may support airplay but in a lot of cases they will stipulate it is for streamed content and won't be supported on downloads. Best to stay in touch with their support teams for confirmation.

As for Netflix, they removed airplay completely quite some time ago.

yeah apps and sites can choose to block airplay if they wish

you can download their apps on the app store on the appletv and access their content that way

or you can reach out to the content providers and inquire about their apps blocking airplay

The streaming services specifically state on their websites that they support Airplay from their iOS apps.

Eg: https://help.disneyplus.com/en-GB/article/disneyplus-en-au-cast-airplay-tv

They even have (basic) troubleshooting guides & minimum supported hardware requirements.

And yes, I’m well aware they have native apps for the Apple TV (it’s the main reason I own an ATV). However if you read my post, I don’t have home internet. And unfortunately I can’t lug my ATV into work & download content directly to the hard drive can I…

I’ve been on with Disney + support tonight & they’ve raised a ticket with their ‘experts’ so we’ll see what they come back with.
