No sound on video recorded on iPhone 17 Pro Max

I have recorded video´s last week on my iPhone 17 Pro Max - but it has not recorded the sound!

If I try to do a test record today, it actually works again, but I really miss the sound on the video´s from last week´s recordings

Any takers ?

Hi, are you currently or have you recently used an external microphone or recording equipment? There have been a few posts over the last 4 or 5 months, but it’s always random and not repeatable so that any troubleshooting can be done.

The in app preview has a speaker mute button so always be sure audio is unmuted when reviewing. Even better is to review in an editing app like iMovie, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve. They have VU meters that display audio if accidentally recorded very low.

It could certainly be a glitch in a microphone. A simple restart will usually resolve a microphone glitch. Are you recording your audio in Stereo, Mono or Spatial?

I don’t record video using the Apple Camera app. I use Blackmagic Camera, it’s free and had on screen VU meters when recording video. I can visually confirm audio is being recorded.

No external devices used. I had used AirPods the day before, but some videos recorded afterwards do have sound. It does appear to have been a glitch with the microphone as it resolved after a restart of the phone. I noticed the issue when I posted a video to social media and on playback it said the clip had no sound. Going into photos on my phone and playing the clip, the speaker icon to mute/unmute sound was greyed out and unselectable.

I do have the Blackmagic app, but had been using the Apple camera app as I had been taking photos, so it was just easy to do video in between photos while the app was open, made easier by having the camera control button so all I had to do was hold the button down.

I’ll look at using Blackmagic next time I do video, at least I’ll be able to check the microphones aren’t glitched before starting recording.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.

Hi Jeff Rear camera, standard video recording settings; no app, no extras, no monitoring and when testing now all is normal again with recording / playback. The missing audio was during 3 days of taking pictures and shorter videos. There is absolutely no audio on the recording; no bursts, no nothing. Uploaded pics and video to Google Photo and neither the iPhone nor Google Photo nor iCloud, has recorded any sound /Jens

I’ve just noticed this on a few holiday videos I **** today. We are on a cruise in Norway (from Australia) and just passed one of the sister ships, which I recorded. Ships pass reasonably close, horns sounding, passengers waving and yelling to each other. Played it back, no sound, and the speaker icon is greyed out. 3 other videos are the same, with others from earlier today playing fine. Recording was with the stock camera app, no settings to prevent audio recording. A restart of the phone and it’s working again. Very disappointed, a one off opportunity wasted by a glitch. If the sound was recorded, but muted and recoverable that’d be ok, but I’m pretty sure there was no sound recorded at all, so I’m SOL.
