iPhone 17 typing sound issue

I recently bought an iphone 17.

When I type something, the sound of the typing is not consistent. More specifically, the sound of the first letter is noticeably louder than the rest. I have restarted my phone, updated the software, and I’ve waited for the issue to disappear on its own for a week too, yet the problem is still present.

It may sound trivial to some of you, but to me it’s a deal-breaker.

Hope somebody can help me.

So, when I start typing, the typing sound for the very first letter that I type is louder (noticeably) than the rest. I’m pretty sure it’s a bug/glitch, (and I have waited over a week for it to be gone), but have no idea what Apple Korea’s gonna say tomorrow.

I’m worried because I literally cannot use my new phone with this bug. I think I want to request for a different phone (same iphone 17) if this issue doesn’t disappear, but not sure if Apple’s gonna accept that.

I honestly didn't have a clue what you were referring to. But in checking my phone, it appears the first letter typed in a new sentence, is slightly louder. If this is what you're referring to, it's likely intentional and while you may not like the word, trivial, in the scheme of things in life to be concerned about. By all means take your phone to your closest Apple Store Genius Bar and demonstrate this to Apple. But I suspect the outcome will be it's normal, not a defect and something you'll get used to.

I've been on this forum daily for more than 15 years and I think you're the first person I've ever seen point this out or be bothered by it. If the typing sound is really that annoying to you, turn it off. You can do that in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback - turn Sound off.

Well, I personally like being meticulous and thorough so I don’t mind being the first person to have brought this up.

If this is intentional, I really don’t know what to say anymore. I guess I’ll speak to their agent tomorrow, possibly return(if that’s possible).

Really don’t understand why Apple would intend this when it literally sounds like a glitch.

And to clarify, I’m not bothered by the sound of the typing. I’m bothered by that increased volume of the first letter.

As I mentioned, I had to actually type on mine with the volume set to a higher level to see what you've observed. And yes, the first letter of a sentence is louder. Punctuation seems to be louder as well. And I'm pretty sure this is intentional as now others are saying they can hear it as well. What I find interesting is it so objectionable to you, that you would want to return your phone over this. But it's you're right to do so if you are within the return window from Apple, if you actually bought it directly from Apple.

I think the volume is also affected by how I hold my iPhone, the angle, distance from reflective (hard surface) or absorbent surface and my ears. My palm sometimes partially covers one of the speakers, muffling the sound slightly. On my 17 pro max, the sound comes from left bottom speaker only. When I occasionally hold it in my left hand (left handed) I notice it’s softer sound and sometimes muffled depending on my grip.

I see. You know, I just typed for a while with my problematic phone and I can see what people are saying.

Maybe we are all hearing it more because we are trying to hear it.

But one thing that seems certain is that when I compare it to my old iphone, which is 14 pro max, there’s definitely that increased volume of the first letter for my new phone.

And here’s another point for everybody that’s saying it might be intentional. The increased volume thing doesn’t happen every time I type. Sometimes, it’s not there. I mean, it’s just hard to see how this could be intentional when it’s just so random.

I bought it in Korea(South), and it’s practically brand new since I haven’t even used it yet.

Hello,

Yes I have. I bought this phone about 3 weeks ago, and haven’t even started using yet because of this problem. I also live here in Korea, and am going to be talking to one of their agents tomorrow.

I’m willing to get to the bottom of this issue, because it’s bothering me so much. Do you think Apple will be kind enough to accommodate my requests? Basically my stance is that I cannot use this phone with this minor (to them. not me) issue.

Yes, I do see this can be seen as unusual. Well, I guess that’s just me, and I sure hope Apple Korea can do something about it though.

One thing that I wanna add though, if it’s intentional, don’t you think it should have some kind of pattern? ‘cause this increased volume of the first letter thing comes and goes.

I can't answer your question. For me, it would be such a non-issue as it wouldn't and doesn't bother me in the least. All I honestly care about is whether the letter or number I tapped on the screen winds up in the body of whatever I'm typing. The sound, again, to me is simply inconsequentially unimportant.
