Use the Camera Control on iPhone - Apple Support

I'm having trouble making these apparently very simple instructions work with my iPhone 17. I click the Camera button and the lens is active, and it's ready to shoot. I can tap the button on the screen, or I can click the Camera button again to take a picture. Either of those two freezes the image. I'm assuming a picture has been taken. But where is it? It's not in Photos. What am I missing here?

Thanks very much for any guidance.

It sounds like you're activating Visual Intelligence which is an Apple Intelligence feature. If you hold the Camera Control button it will activate that. It doesn't take a photo but rather just a temporary shot, and allows you to ask ChatGPT regarding it , or interact with it such as translate text or add the event to your calendar. If you want to open the camera, you only have to quickly press and release the Camera Control button.
