Can't leave iMessage group chat with 3 or fewer participants

iMessage issue:

Why can’t I leave a conversation with total of 3 or less people in the conversation?

Per this 10 year old thread where the problem still persists today in 2026??

All 3 of us use Apple devices, so why can I leave a conversation that is 4 or more but NOT a conversation that is 3 or less? This makes NO sense at all?

Doesn't need to make sense that is how Apple designed it as outlined here https://support.apple.com/en-us/108303

Kindly ask the people in the group to stop texting and create another thread with just them two, or block the message or turn off alerts.

No problem in Teams or a host of other conversation/message/chat software. SMS/MMS isn’t the problem.
Regardless, two wrongs don’t make right … I’m somewhat baffled that people are responding in defense of this rather obvious problem (not to mention other security implications and/or privacy implications).

That was in reference to thinking that changing the platform was going to solve the problem and as you can see that is not the case as Google Messages works the same way on Android devices. Certainly there are other Messaging services on both devices that can be used where you are able to leave a group chat and you can use those on either platform.

For Apple Messages, your only option is to use the Feedback link that has been supplied. There is nothing to defend, that is just the way it is. None of us work for Apple, so we would not even be able to speculate on the reasons or if they are working on a feature update to provide a change. Apple documents that you can leave a group chat when there are 3 other people, so it is not a secret or something they are trying to hide.

  • You can leave a group text message as long as there are three other people on the thread and everyone is using an Apple device.

As for "Why", nobody here can answer that. What you do with your choices is up to you.

Nope, Apple is not going to answer you by posting anything here and anyone that wants to have their concerns heard by Apple will use the Feedback link.

It seems like you think this is a Social Media site, but you are also wrong there, it is a Support Site for other Apple users like you to provide assistance for a Technical Support questions when possible. We don't speak for Apple and certainly have no obligation or care about defending any decision they have made. That is exactly the type of discussions that you would find on a Social Media site along with the rants and comments such as they are going to switch to another platform. No on here cares.

You have been given all the correct information whether you like it or not.

  • Apple documents removal in group chats ONLY when there are 3 other people.
  • The feedback link is used to submit feature requests.
  • Why questions are not answerable by other users for any decision made by Apple that is not documented.

Whether you like that or not is up to you. What you do with that information is also up to you. It seems your other posts on this Support Site just follow the same pattern on how you are unhappy with Apple. OK noted, now what?

Then I guess I don’t “need” to buy Apple products … I guess I have this crazy aversion to things that don’t make sense. ;)

OR, in the real world, Apple could “fix” their app … that would seem to be the more productive option. But hey, what do I know, I can always divert my money elsewhere where things do make sense.

We are just fellow users. What products you buy doesn't affect us.

You can let Apple know your thoughts here:

You're free to spend your money where ever you want on whatever product you want.

There is no Apple here in these user to user technical forum.

You were given other options and workaround.

I guess you can make that conjecture for anything … literally anything.

But I’ll stick with the real world where gravity is real and logic is just 1’s and 0’s … FYI, 40+ year as a software engineer and there is no logical reason and whatever other reason it is will not be due to programming/design but some pandering to neurotic humans.

I don't think Google Messages with a SMS/MMS group chat will be your answer, but good luck.

  • Not sure where you saw those instructions but there is no way to leave a group in Google Messages. You need to just archive and mute the notifications

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that you have insider knowledge about why and how Apple makes decisions.

I’m not going into the redirection (aka the Feedback link) … Apple do monitor this forum because information can be golden, trust me I’ve coded enough tracking cookies in my time. Feedback is just another Apple owned website operating under the context as this one.

Yes you are defending Apple’s context … if you were being objective, you would have said “Yes, this makes no sense and I don’t know why Apple haven’t addressed it” … rather pointing me to a link on Feedback and claiming nobody can answer, when in fact they Apple can answer IF they wanted to. The Feedback link provides zero commitment to an answer also … just going in circles.
