Disable 'You Might Also Like' in Apple Podcasts

Apple, how do I permanently disable “You Might Also Like” recommendations in Apple Podcasts? I keep getting served Jay Shetty content, and I actively object to his material. I’ve marked episodes as “Not Interested,” but the algorithm continues resurfacing similar content.

If users explicitly signal disinterest, that preference should be respected. Please provide a way to fully opt out of recommendation categories or block specific creators altogether.

Sorry for the confusion - those episode you are talking about are typically from a service called Podroll - and even though they are not clearly labeled as such - they are paid placement on those podcasts. (Which it is sketchy at best in my personal opinion when something is a paid placement and not clearly labeled as such)

Most listeners hate this feature - which is why if you use the Overcast app to listen to podcasts - you can actually block these. There is no way to block them with the Apple Podcasts app at this time.

But in the Overcast App - Go to Settings - then select "Promos & Reruns" - Then select "Skip" and it will skip all of these on all shows. Again this is per the FREE - Overcast App in the iOS App store.

The Overcast App also flags the episodes with a special symbol so you can see those Paid placement episodes for each show. Note - the podcasters agreed to allow these paid episodes - but you should still contact the podcaster and let them know you don't like that they are there and not labeled as a paid placement.

In the Apple Podcasts app - the "You might also like" is not actually about "you" - it is NOT an algorithm based on your actions. It used to be called "People also listened to" - and it is based on the podcast you are looking at - and what other people that listen to that podcast also listen to. Again it has nothing to do with your actions - it is just about the other listeners of that podcast.

Hey @mothnyc -

Wow, so there’s actually a monetization option that allows insertion of paid content directly into your queue?? TIL smthg.

I’m a little surprised I’ve never encountered this podroll ‘feature’ considering my postcastaholic tendencies. My seemingly good fortune aside, I completely empathize with the frustration that sort of invasive digital species would cause b/c I have a similar intervention-light listening style…after I queue up 10-15, I don’t want to micromanage (actively skipping thru ad breaks is annoying enough already).

So unsubscribing seems like a highly reasonable first response to me. But I second the suggestion from forum member @Robert Walch to also complain directly to the podcasters who opt in. Podcasters highly value the their parasocial relationship status with listeners, so they’re likely to be receptive to feedback. And imo, the case for Overcast as an alternative platform is also fairly persuasive. It might be worth taking it for a test drive. (My 2¢, fwiw.)

Thank you for your reponse. I realize my original post wasn’t precise — sorry about that.

I’m not referring to the “You Might Also Like” recommendations in the app. I can easily ignore those. The problem is the episodes being inserted directly into my feed labeled “You Might Also Like.” Because they appear in the feed of shows I follow, they disrupt the passive, radio-style listening flow I prefer.

I find some of this content, particularly the Jay Shetty podcast, objectionable and would prefer not to have it inserted into my listening queue at all. I believe they pay for this placement. Is there any way to stop it, opt out, or pay to disable it?

I unfollowed all the podcasts that were doing this kind of marketing. Manually removing the Jay Shetty content each time it was inserted was too much of a hassle for me, as I prefer passive radio-style listening.

It's possible they stopped doing these insertions, but I wouldn't know because I stopped listening.
