What does 'Subscribe to Edit' mean in Final Cut Pro 12?

Ever since the upgrade to FCP 12, I see this at the bottom of the screen.

Subscribe to Edit?

Subscribe where to edit what?

Clicking on it does nothing.

This is probably more appropriate.

With the release of Final Cut Pro 12, Apple has introduced a, "Creator Studio" subscription service that offers exclusive content, such as new title templates, generators, and effects, which can trigger "subscribe to edit" prompts even for users who own the standalone, one-time purchase version.

Here is what is happening and how to manage it:

  • The Cause: If you are using, adding, or trying to access new premium content (indicated by a blue dot in the browser) that is exclusive to the subscription version, FCP 12 will prompt you to subscribe.
  • Standalone vs. Subscription: FCP 12 is still available as a one-time purchase, but certain advanced AI features or premium content assets are being gated behind the new "Apple Creator Studio" subscription.
  • How to Remove the Prompt/Effect: If you have applied a premium effect or template that is triggering the prompt, you can remove it by selecting the clip in the timeline and choosing Edit > Remove Effects (or pressing Option-Command-X).
  • Ignoring the Prompt: You can continue to use the core, perpetual version of FCP 12 without subscribing, but you will not have access to the new, premium "Creator Studio" assets. Reddit

To avoid these prompts, avoid using the new, specialized content in the titles, generators, or effects browsers that are part of the Creator Studio package.

I too have seen this blue Subscribe to Edit panel, it appeared immediately after updating to FCP 12. Reported it to Apple via FCP Feedback.

It has always been visible at the bottom of the browser list, obscuring whatever item is beneath it. Prompted by Ian R. Brown's comment above I disabled all trial plugins in the FXFactory app settings, launched FCP and the Subscribe to Edit panel had gone.

I have more than 30 trial FXFactory plugins and not enough time right now to find the guilty item by elimination but will try this later and report back with any findings.

Steenbeck6Plate, this is both interesting and puzzling.

  • I don't have any trial FXFactory plugins installed.
  • I have a default workspace set up for dual monitors.
  • I do my editing on the left monitor.
  • The media browser, titles, and generators are on the right monitor.
  • If I choose another workspace, the "Subscribe to Edit" button disappears.
  • If I then go back to my original dual monitor workspace, the "Subscribe to Edit" button is not there.
  • If I shut down FCP and restart into my default workspace, the "Subscribe to Edit" button is back.
  • So...when I start FCP now, I quickly go to another workspace, then back to my default and it's gone.

The button doesn't DO anything, so I have decided it is not worth worrying about any more. But it will be interesting to see if this is fixed/changed in the next update.

Ian, this appears at the bottom left of the right-hand monitor where I have the browser set up in my saved editing workspace. In that setup, that screen is locked full screen and I can't move it. However, if I choose another workspace, it disappears. And if I then go back to my saved dual-monitor workspace, it's gone.

I checked for some Creator Studio titles, generators, or effects and I don't have any. None of them have a blue dot. I never tried out the subscription version and never downloaded anything related to it. My editing work is pretty simple, basic stuff. I don't use any eye-wrenching effects or fancy, animated titles in my work.

I don't know what it is, and it doesn't do anything, so I'm going to stop worrying about it. It's just THERE, but it is indeed...ODD

It is the paid version for sure. Screen grab from the dock...

Ian, your question proved to be interesting. I have never edited video using only a single monitor. Ever since I started with Adobe Premiere on a Pinnacle Reel-Time Nitro system way back in the 90s, I have always used dual monitors. So, I reset the FCP workspace to the default single monitor setup and the button did not appear. However, when I went back to my saved dual-monitor workspace, it also did not appear! I then quit FCP, re-opened it, and the button was back.

It's magic...
