Forgotten user password on iMac running OS X Lion

I have an old Imac running Mac O.S. x Lion, haven't used this for awhile and can't remember user password. It logs in automatically when powered up so can still use this for dvd player is about all it's still good for. Not sure if there is a way to reset lost password with this or not. May recycle this since is so old. Can't upgrade to newer O.S.

Hi,

To reset a forgotten password on macOS Lion (10.7), restart your Mac while holding Command-R to enter Recovery Mode. Open Terminal from the Utilities menu, type resetpassword, and press Enter. Select your user account, enter a new password, and restart.

Another option is to get an external USB CD/DVD disc drive for your current Mac and recycle the old iMac.

There are plenty of CD/DVD disc drives at Amazon, plus some LG CD/DVD disc drives at BestBuy.

I don't have a new iMac, just 2015 macbook pro the drive still works with that but I need to get old batteries removed or device recycled. I may get a mac mini or studio sometime later this year if I can afford that. Got a new microsoft surface ten device with usb-c dock, unfortunatley the mac superdrive doesn't work with that not sure why. May get new universal cd/dvd drive that works with windows. I can play dvds / blue ray disks on xbox also.

The old imac just has nice presence to sit on desk and play documentary dvds or music in background. Will try again to reset password today, may need to reset root administrator password instead of user and keychain password also is different than login password. Not sure if there is error that prevented that from working the first time. Now the device requires login password on startup, darn. Tried resetting O.S. but that didn't work over internet, don't know if O.S. Lion is even on Apple servers anymore. May still have physical disk of that or can see if I can get a new disk of that to reset device.
