How do I put an existing app on my home screen

Where is it currently?
If it's in the App Library, you can just drag it onto a Home Screen from there.
Same process if it's in a Folder. Drag it out of the folder.

If you have not downloaded it, you can do so from the App Store or Purchase History by tapping on the cloud icon with the downward arrow.
