How can I install an earlier version of Music on Mac?

The Version 1.6.3.2 delivered with MacOS Tahoe got several issues to make me think about to take a step back and revert to an earlier version.

There is no download option, as it is for other software products.

So, does anybody tried to simply replace the app from an older Mac? I guess this version can be found somewhere around.

Maybe just one version before to get rid of the control bar issue.

Replacing the current version of the Music app with an older one is not possible.

Music is installed as an integrated part of macOS, and as such, cannot be uninstalled or addressed separately from the OS. The Music app is not available as a separate, downloadable application.

Yes, Apple made changes to the app with the release of macOS Tahoe 26, and many users are disappointed about the control bar change in particular and some other changes throughout as well.

If you feel strongly about the situation, you can leave product feedback directly to Apple or submit a request for features consideration in software using this link: Product Feedback - Apple

Well folks,

It is a way to big task to revert this. System Security needs to take off, even to replace the existing version. But all the effort will not make it. Music 1.5 will not run. Lack of debugging logs are no help. I give up for now.

Maybe some enthusiast will create a manual to accomplish this, I will not.

The only way to get rid of it is to change the Operating System - sounds like a Plan B. ;-)

I took a look to --> http://swinsian.com/ and it looks promising.

There is a 30 days full feature evaluation period before it cost about $40. I will check if it fits to my kind of usage. It is a bit like 'the old days', but this must not be that bad.

Several things, that do not work as expected in Apple Music do work fine in Swinsian, like Cmd-L, the control bar is at the top, a playlist icon does not cover the half of the screen, and so on...

Apple Music must stay for the sync of the iOS devices and other stuff, it can not be uninstalled anyway. I have to check the interoperability.

Maybe Apple should think about a $40 "Pro" Version - this one now with support and usability. I would like to pay for it.

Much older system version had Apple's music player, iTunes, as a separate application and it was tolerant of versions being used. When about 5 or 6 years ago Apple changed iTunes to Music they also made it part of the operating system (like calling a sunroof on a car an "essential" part of a car) and you cannot change that. For example, for many years I would simply copy my 2007 version of iTunes onto my newer Mac and I was able to run this version of iTunes under mac operating system versions that were 10 versions newer. In fact the Mac has two versions of iTunes on it an my old version lived perfectly happily with the newer version. I default set everything to use the old version.

When I made the jump from High Sierra to Sequoia, my old iTunes refused to start, so it would not surprise me if when you try to copy that old Music version the system refused to let you use it.

I don't use Music a lot these days and when I next do some major work on my library I may well look at using a third party music player. This one looks promising and looks like it was styled on older players but I haven't tried it yet --> http://swinsian.com/

Two things happened:

  • When Apple broke up iTunes in Catalina, the Finder now had to be able to access and understand the contents of the Music and TV libraries (formerly the iTunes Library). In Mojave and earlier, I do not think that the Finder had to understand anything about how those libraries worked.
  • Catalina was also where Apple changed startup disk structure to introduce a read-only System volume . In all recent versions of macOS, Music and TV live on the signed sealed system volume. (Not just them – but pretty much all of the "standard" applications except the very largest ones: Pages, Numbers, Keynote, GarageBand, and iMovie. Those are separately updatable via downloads from the App Store.)

So you can't easily modify the standard copy of the Music application – the Mac will try to block the modification, and will refuse to boot from the tampered-with drive if you do manage to modify the application. And any given version of the Finder may have been designed to work with the particular version of the Music applications which Apple shipped as part of the same distribution of macOS.
