A never-used "new" 2020 model will likely have a useless battery. Just weeks ago someone else posted about having bought a 5-year old iPad that was never opened or activated whose battery was dead, The iPad only worked on wall power.

Batteries have a finite useable life whether they are used or not. They are little chemical factories that convert stored chemical energy to electrical energy. As their raw materials age, their conversion abilities are depleted.
