Safari: Can't remove pinched website icons

I cannot remove miniature icons of previously listed websites revealed by pinch in Safari

Remove bookmark icons I updated my '23 MBP to Sonoma yesterday and noticed that the bookmark icons are in my Safari bookmarks bar. I preferred it when the name only appeared and I've gone through "settings" multiple times. Any suggestions or is it hidden somewhere in preferences? TIA

Your post is a little ambiguous. Not sure just what you mean.

A screenshot might help.

When I pinch Safari I get the image below and can close any of those tabs by clicking the x⃝ at the top left of each thumbnail image as indicated.
