Will external macOS drives work on a new Mac Studio?

I have been happily running Pro Tools and Studio One/Fender Studio Pro, on a 10 Core Mac Studio M1 Max since they were released GA around 2022, however all good things come to an end. The power supply and the main board have corrosion on them (probably from being on constantly, with the work I do, I rarely turn computers off, lesson learned perhaps)... Anyway, aside from running the OS from the internal drive, I run various versions of Mac OS booting from external drives. The internal drive is backed up with time machine, with data being copied to a cloud location as well.

My question is, will the external drives with Mac OS on them need to be rebuilt from scratch, or if I choose one will it reboot and be useable after some configuration and security information is (most likely) entered?

Well, I am answering my own question. The "open box" M1 Ultra came yesterday and after configuring the internal drive with the additional software I use, I decided to try and boot off on of the external drives I had booted off of with the original M1 Max. There was some password authorization, a software update, had to login in to iCloud to resync all the Apple 'stuff' and then it came up.

Stuggling with the MOTU MIDI driver extension, but that's the only thing that needs attention. Tried reinstalling but the "allow" button doesn't show under Privacy and Security.

Another factor that makes this more difficult is that a modern (post 2018) Intel Mac will not boot from any external drive until you make adjustments to its Privacy & Security settings to authorize that.

a Mac with Apple-silicon may force you to re-install a new instance of MacOS on that drive before it can create the required locked system snapshot:

A brand new Mac Studio, today, will come with macOS Tahoe preinstalled. You will not be able to boot it from a drive with any earlier version of macOS ... that includes Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey, etc. Nor can you downgrade it to a previous version of macOS.

'What version can be installed' is a very confusing issue, but these subtle rules apply:

A version of MacOS that is OLDER than the original-release software for a particular model Mac cannot possibly run on that Mac, because the newest drivers for its new hardware are not included. (Also, you must use release numbers, like 17E56 not just revision numbers 10.13.2 to make a completely accurate assessment.)

The instance of MacOS that "shipped in the box" with a specific computer likely works with that model only -- it does not have "drivers for every appropriate model Mac" so will not run on different models. Any updates you perform on that MacOS software, including re-install of the same major version, may still have only drivers for that model Mac.

If there is actual corrosion on the metal & electronics, then that means either a liquid spill, or using the computer in an environment with very high humidity, or maybe operating the computer too close to an air conditioning duct. Running a computer 24/7 won't cause corrosion by itself.

It is hard to say.

Did you actually install macOS onto these external drives? Or did you clone them? The former may work given the caveats provided by the others. The latter is less likely since I've seen people report a cloned drive may not always work on the same device after an update.

Apologies for this one, the Mac Studio M1 Ultra is an "Open Box" buy, so it's actually the same build year as my Mac Studio M1 Max that may have died, so it will probably be backloaded to it's original OS from 2022.

My fault, sorry for the confusion.

Completely unrelated, I got the old M1 Max back from Apple repair, paid the $50 for the service, written in the work order, "unable to repair", I didn't want to pay $2000 for a new power supply and main board. For laughs I plugged it in and...... "bong".... it went on. Took it back to my studio, plugged it in and it's been running like a champ for 3 days. The M1 Ultra arrives tomorrow.... I hope they don't fight!

Oh yeah, I am from the school that if it's backed up to a local drive or 2, it's not backed up. I consider time machine to be an "availablilty" service. Backups are disconnected and cloud based for me these days.

And I agree that I am living on borrowed time with the Mac that came back to life, but after 2 weeks, it's great to have it running again, even to just bridge until the new unit is configured and ready.

Will external macOS drives work on a new Mac Studio?
