Can a carrier-locked iPhone be traded in at an Apple Store?

Is it possible for me to trade in a carrier locked device at the Apple Store? For example, Cricket Wireless has a deal on the iPhone 16e and 2 months of service for a good price. They charge you for the phone and 2 months of service up front. In order to carrier unlock the phone you must have service for 6 months. After my 2 months of service are over I wanted to trade in the phone to the Apple Store. Would I get trade in credit, and if so would it be less than if the phone was carrier unlocked?

Actually, yes. It doesn't matter if it's carrier locked or not, so long as it's not activation locked.

If it's at all possible, you'd be much better off trying to sell it to someone else who wants to use it on Cricket.
I think you missed the fact they clearly owe money on the contract for the phone.

Actually, no. That is not what the OP said.

They paid for the phone up front. They don't owe anything on the device.

Perhaps, but if I were them, I'd read the fine print to be sure they don't owe beyond the first two months.

Last year Visible had a promotion for a free brand new iPhone 13 if you bought a year of their most premium service for $395. I didn’t have to port in my old number and gave the phone to my dad when it unlocked after 60 days. I don’t need 2 phone numbers so I was going to let my service expire this month. When I saw the cost of the iPhone 16e from cricket it seemed like a great deal especially considering the trade in value from Apple now that the iPhone 17e is out. Anyways, the reason I made the original post was because I was going to switch to Cricket Wireless and pay for 6 months of service ($310) so the device could be unlocked and I could do a trade in sometime in the future. However if I’m able to only pay $170 for the phone and 2 months of service and get full trade in credit from Apple even if it’s still carrier locked to Cricket, I would much rather do that.
