Cannot Open MXF Files on New Mac Mini M4Pro

Hi guys

I have just bought a Mac Mini M4Pro and I’m running the latest version of Tahoe.

We do a lot of video editing and have many MXF files that I had saved when using Windows (NTFS format).

  1. I have set up a disk in a caddy and formatted a disc to Apple’s APFS and spent the last week transferring my files over from the NTFS disc to it.
  2. My other files saved to Windows (e.g. MPEG4, etc) all opened. But when I tried to open an MXF file, I got a ‘wrong type of file’ error.
  3. I have downloaded the Pro Video Format Pack 3.1. And I can now see the QT play screen when I click to open but the screen is blank, not displaying the file’s contents and the play button has a line through it.

Have I overlooked something? Can any one advise what I can do to play these files, please?

The Material Exchange Format (MXF) SMPTE A/V data file is associated with higher-end Professional video cameras and professional applications such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Pinnacle Studio, or Avid Media Composer.

VLC may or may not play these MXF files, and cannot convert or edit their content.

MacOS is a UNIX operating system that maintains a database of installed applications and associated extensions of supported data files. There is nothing inherent in the operating system that associates the MXF format with any application until the installation of one of those Pro applications in the first paragraph.

Many thanks. I am keen to find if there is a solution, although I had thought about going down the VLC route and will do if I must. I did try moving a file onto the Mini’s disk to test in case it was an issue with reading from the caddy, but that didn’t work either.

I am frustrated the Video Pack is supposed to play these files but doesn’t (I thought these kind of irritating problems were behind me when I left Windows😉)

I can't find anywhere on the internet that MXF is anything but an obscure wrapper for ad driven video. What exactly were you expecting? Apple seems to have no interest in supporting random media codecs.

Thank you. I ran a video production company using professional equipment. Without triggering a discussion about that the merits of MXF as a wrapper, etc., here’s a wiki description of these video files that may help:

“…MXF is an industry-standard, professional container format for video and audio, commonly used in television, filmmaking, and by cameras from Sony, Canon, and Panasonic. It acts as a wrapper, storing media data, metadata (like frame rates and timecodes), and, often, high-quality uncompressed video…”

The Apple Pro Video Formats Pack 3.1 is supposed to cover these pro files. But it doesn’t open them on my Mac Mini M4Pro and I wonder if I have installed it incorrectly or need to do something to engage the pack?
