I have a 2012 mac mini that my wife is using to record on and it crashed and when I eventually got it restarted the login page changed and it won’t let me login with the correct password also it’s asking me foe a name which it never has before and the screen picture has changed. Can you help please

This sounds suspiciously like a case where a previous owner did not prepare the computer properly for ownership transfer.

Have you tried typing in the user name manually & providing the password?
What version of macOS is on this computer?
Thank you all for your help, the problem is not just the password but it’s forgotten my username, I put in what it should be but still no joy. One similar post I read suggested that the hard drive could be packing up, I know the mac is old and isn’t worth much but the problem is my wife (despite my prompts) hasn’t backed stuff up . I have one more thing to try before I remove the hd and try to recover the info . In a good way it’s prompted me to be super careful
Still trying, the mac mini was bought years ago second hand, I fear the hd is on the way out, it was used by me but I upgraded. Got one more thing to try before removing the hd and attempting to recover the data.
