iPhone 6s unable to update to iOS 16

My iPhone 6s Plus was never able to update past iOS 15.8.5. Yet worked fine for the apps i used (Patreon) till last week. There is no way to force the update to install even after downloading it. Your next step would have to be an iphone 8 or higher.

i only use mine for apps so will likely get a cheap 8 to replace my 6s.

But considering this will happen with future updates, it may he better to get a newer iphone.

iOS 17 already dropped support for iphone 8. So its a matter of time. Best bet is iphone 12 or higher.

An iPhone SE 2nd, or an iPhone 11, or later, gets iOS 26. Which is the current (2026) iOS version.

iPhone 8 and iPhone X are capped at iOS 16, which already fails for the apps requiring the three most recent iOS versions.

If you want a model with recent but not current support, that’s iPhone XS, and iPhone XR. Which get iOS 18.

You are correct. The iPhone 6s is not compatible with iOS 16, 17, 18 or 26.

If you need iOS 16, you will need at least an iPhone X. But since iOS 16 is now at least 5 generations behind, and developers will be writing apps for higher IOS versions, you would be wise to look for an iPhone that is capable of running iOS 26.

An iPhone 16 or 17 would be recommended.

An iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or iPhone SE 1 isn't capable of 16 or above; they require an A11 or better CPU.

It never had, and will never have, iOS 16. That’s a model so old that it originally ran iOS 9.

Nor will it update, as iPhone 6 tops out at iOS 12.

You will need a newer or new iPhone, unless you can convince the apps you need to add support for iOS 12.

Consider the 17e. Reasonably priced, and about 1,000 times more powerful than a 6S.
