Safari: Where have my bookmark folders gone?

I've got countless folders in my Safari sidebar organizing decades of web pages. They seem to have disappeared with the latest update of Safari (Sequoia 15.7.4). Folders no longer show up and I can't browse them either to save, or far worse, FIND any of the data I've saved.

Your bookmark folders should still exist, but their visibility or organization might have changed with the update. The most common fix is to ensure the sidebar and bookmark view are correctly enabled and expanded.

If the folders are still missing or not showing, you may need to restore from a Time Machine backup if you had your bookmarks stored locally and they are gone.

Compact was not checked, that wasn't the issue. "Bookmarks" has been moved and the bookmarks folders have been buried and their icons changed which made them difficult to find.

Apple apparently went to some trouble to make this more difficult to navigate. One wishes they'd expended the effort to make it possible to search for bookmark folders by name.

That is a solution to a question I have not asked. The problem was not finding or opening the sidebar. The problem was that the Bookmarks and Favorites buttons have been moved and the icons for the bookmarks folders have been changed so that they no longer display as folders but at a quick glance appear to be icons for individual bookmarks.

I found them and indeed, visibility and organization as well as the appearance of the folders have all been changed with the update, all to make them more obscure and to make it more difficult to find folders of bookmarks.
