rather than trying to address all those questions, I will give you all the steps to set it up, and use it.

to record the mac's internal sound with quicktime (or also “shift-command-5”) you need additional software. i use the free BlackHole Virtual Audio Driver. then you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" in the recording options instead of "Built-in Microphone."

or for an audio recording, choose "BlackHole 2ch" in the audio recording controls.

you will also need to set up a multi-output device in your audio MIDI setup utility to be able to both hear and record the internal audio at the same time.

to set up a multi-output device:

Open Audio MIDI Setup: (found in /Applications/Utilities)

hit the '+' button in the bottom left corner and select "Create Multi Output Device"

then in the panel that appears on the right, in the Multi-Output Device tab, select "Built-in Output" AND "BlackHole 2ch". (and, if you want, any of your other connected devices.)

once you do that, (and BEFORE recording) you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" or "Multi-Output Device" in your menubar "sound options".

to both hear the speakers and record the audio at the same time, choose "Multi-Output Device". before choosing multi-out, set the internal speakers' volume to a comfortable level first. you cannot control the volume once you are in multi-out mode.

otherwise QT will only be able to use the mac's microphone to record the sounds coming from the mac's speakers. and this results in very poor audio quality, along with the possibility of capturing any ambient sounds.

Thank you for the answer, I'm looking for a solution within the existing operating system or native app.

There is none. The only audio source "built into" macOS for QT screen recording is the mic.

If you want to screen record video + audio together using a different audio source you need a 3rd party utility like Blackhole Audio or Loopback. Or use an actual screen recording app like Screenflow.

You can screen record with audio by using either of these two methods:

  1. Blackhole Audio (free, DIY utility) and set up a Multi-Output Device in Audio MIDI Setup or
  2. Loopback or similar app to route audio

Both methods re-route system/app audio so that it can be used in QuickTime for screen recordings. Once set up, in QT, you would select the re-routed audio source as your audio input for the screen recording.

Blackhole has online help for setting it up plus creating the Multi-Output Device. Loopback has its own included help file but since it's a finished app it is easier to use.

are you saying, no to that
that Com+Shift+5 in fact records the screen and only audio input from the Mac's builtin mic by default?

that is correct.

I remember sunflower with screen recording software how much of a conflict that was -- is BlackHole seamless or does it constantly need attention to keep audio input on builtin mic when Blackhole is not wanted -- sunflower kept taking over the audio input setting (a lot of problems)

blackhole is what I used to replace soundflower many macOS ago. IIRC, Big Sur. and, yes, it is seamless. it will ONLY be used when needed by QTP for recordings.

if you used to use soundflower, you should be able to set up blackhole on your Mac. if you need help, reply here and I will post step by step instructions. :)

I noticed some level of source audio being captured with Com+Shift+5 but never paid much attention to it

I presumed it was recording from the source -- its level independent of the builtin speaker volume (you could have the volume low and it would record whatever audio level is contained in the source)

my goal would be to Com+Shift+5 to record the audio from the source video at the level contained in the original video -- irrespective of speaker volume

i went to blackhole website and saw this screenshot of their product:

image: blackhole.macupdate.com

i see OUTPUT -- that's the audio destination -- correct?

i don't understand where blackhole is sending the audio

but i can watch a youtube i'm sure

i think the recording would need INPUT to capture the original audio from the source video being recorded -- to burn it into the screencapture .mov

further, once it's a .mov -- would not the audio play out OUTPUT> Built-in speakers

why would i need blackhole to output?

i don't mind paying the developer $10 for something useful that doesn't complicate my audio

looks like system requirements include Mojave Sequoia Tahoe (my macOSes) M-series and Intel hardware?

I thought I should address that comment. I keep calling blackhole "free". and yes, it can be had for free. when I first downloaded it, they didn't ask for a donation. but after using it for a while, I noticed on their site that they had started asking for a donation. so I then did make a $10 donation. and, yes, it is worth every penny!

I’m in my iPad Pro m1 RECORD SCREEN a video

i talk loud and turn volume full to almost minimum during capture

i play back in photos it plays the audio steady — what seems like the original source level

i get no talking or volume adjustments in the recording

this is the behavior i recall (not input from the mic)

will check macOS later…
