iPhone SE (3rd Gen): iOS 14/15 to avoid iOS 26?

I'm looking to buy a refurbished iPhone SE (3rd generation) and have a choice between one that has iOS14 installed and another that has iOS15 installed.

Is one of these a better choice if I would like avoid having to upgrade to iOS 26? Just hoping to avoid a scenario where I set up the device and am forced into an update I don't want because whichever version of 14 or 15 on the phone itself doesn't work without an update (likely to iOS 26).

I realize this is a very specific question so I'm trying to keep this as straightforward as possible. But if anyone else has any specific advice about this scenario and my general desire (which is to avoid having to use iOS 26 if I can avoid it), I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

Apple is only signing the latest iOS version for the iPhone SE (3rd generation). Older versions such as iOS 15, 16, 17, or 18 are no longer signed. Because of that, an SE (3rd gen) cannot be activated today on anything except the newest signed release. Even if the device arrives with iOS 15 installed, setup will require updating to the current version before activation can complete.

The SE (3rd gen) never supported iOS 14, so any listing claiming that version is incorrect. The unit showing iOS 15 is the only legitimate option, but it will still need to update during setup because Apple no longer signs older firmware for this model.

I wouldn't touch an iPhone which is still on iOS 14 or 15, with a 10 foot pole. It's without question used and unless you can see the phone in person, it shouldn't be purchased. I don't know why you are so afraid of iOS 26? Don't believe the negative things you've read. It's one of the most stable releases Apple has released, perhaps ever. Visually, Liquid Glass is terrific looking, but can be adjusted if you don't like it. I even wrote a user tip for people who may not appreciate all that Liquid Glass brings --> https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250010041

But before you purchase a used iPhone, especially if you don't know who you're buying it from, please read this and avoid making a huge mistake --> https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250001038

Finally, buying an iPhone still on iOS 14/15, means it has missed a few years worth of updates, which will leave the phone vulnerable to security issues and it won't be long, if it already is not able to run some apps, which are no longer supported on such outdated iOS versions.

All the way around, this is an opportunity for disappointment.

Re: “You mentioned that Apple would not let me have the iOS 15 patch, but do you know if there is a patch for iOS 14?”

There is no patch for iOS 14. All of the iPhones compatible with it can update to at least iOS 15, and must update to a current release of the latest major version of iOS that they can run to get the patch.

Only phones for which iOS 15 is the end of the line will be allowed to have the iOS 15 patch.

Only phones for which iOS 16 is the end of the line will be allowed to have the iOS 16 patch.

Only phones for which iOS 18 is the end of the line will be allowed to have the iOS 18 patch.

Any phone that can update to iOS 26 will have to update to iOS 26 or later to get the patch.

Keeping an iPhone SE (3rd generation) – or any other iPhone that is compatible with iOS 26 – on iOS 18 or earlier will result in iMessages, FaceTime, and perhaps other things breaking after next January.

Updating to iOS 26 (or later) is the only way those iPhones have of getting the new security certificate that fixes that. If you had an iPhone that could not update further than iOS 15 (such as an iPhone 6s, 7 or 7 Plus), then you could update to a version of iOS 15 that had the new security certificate. But Apple won't let you have the iOS 15 patch if your iPhone is capable of updating to iOS 26.

That's helpful to know, particularly the January 2027 issue. I think I am fine with the understanding that I will eventually be forced to upgrade, which I can live with, but all else being equal was hoping that maybe either iOS 14 or iOS 15 might be usable for the time being. If there's essentially no difference and both of them are equally likely to force an upgrade prior to then, then that's acceptable too.

You mentioned that Apple would not let me have the iOS 15 patch, but do you know if there is a patch for iOS 14? I was mostly just curious if one was worth choosing over the other.

Thanks again.

There would be no patch for any phone capable of running iOS 26.
