Voice Control Keeps on Activating

Hi, I just got the iphone4 and went performing the normal sync. Upon completion, suddenly the voice control gets activated without being called upon. It does that all the time and it's getting annoying.

How can I get rid of this?

Iphone 4, iOS 4, nil

People keep suggesting that turning off Siri fixes the problem but for many people this isn't working. I turned off Siri a month ago and now I have the exact same problem with voice control

Activating randomly... like whenever I move my phone with headphones in. My podcasts also speed up and slow down or stop playing randomly.... this only happens when I listen to podcasts which ***** because I listen to them every day on my walks.... I've tried 3 different pairs of headphones so the only thing I can think of now is maybe the wires are loose in all 3? This is getting ridiculous... i also can't believe that someone from Apple hasn't chimed in yet with a solution as I believe this thread started in 2013.

I switched Siri and Spotlight off on my iPhone 4S (I know a blast from the past). It's supposed to improve battery life dramatically. I was looking at my phone early this (Sunday) morning and pressed the home button too long. It was totally silent here, but none-the-less, it popped up with voice control and 'Call' one of my main clients names and the options 'work' 'home'. 'Mobile' ! NOOO! I definately don't want to do that, it's 7:30 on a Sunday morning !

Like cutting the wires on an unexplored bomb, I wasn't sure what to do next, I panicked and held down the 'off button' to try to switch it off. WRONG ANSWER ! it then proceeded to say 'calling' and the name of my client😳. I held it down again, longer and managed to shut the phone off before it dialled. Phew !

When I switched it back on, it hadn't dialled, thank goodness and found how to turn off voice dial (it's strangely hidden away in password settings, you have to type your password first). But that resolved the problem.

I think it's a memory issue on my phone, as I also keep getting 'zoom enabled' pop up on the screen at random times. Joys of the iPhone 4S :-)

This is a common problem. It appears to be a problem with the microphone (on the headset). Under conditions that are humid or windy, the problem seems to be worse. The humidity gets into the mic, and is able to complete a circuit, turning voice control on.

For a temporary workaround, try using earbuds that do NOT have a mic.

It's not just a headphone problem. My wife's 3GS can be sitting on the table and suddenly the voice control screen comes up and often the phone will call someone or start the iPod app playing. Or the phone can just be in her purse and it will spontaneously make a call--we've realized that probably VC self-activated and then someone mentioned a name that's in the contact list and boom, phone call.

Just think: you can be talking about someone and, unknown to you, your phone might call them...and they hear your conversation, which included their name…

It is not just with headsets, humidity, moisture, wind...there's something wrong with the software or iPhone hardware itself.

It's not just a headphone problem. Since the mic/switch part of the headset mimics the home button, it can cause the problem. But phones with no headset problems at all are suddenly activating the voice control menu and then automatically dialing a number if a word is said nearby that fits the owner's contact list. For example, I was teaching a class with my phone lying on the desk. Voice Control spontaneously activated, but I was standing to the side and didn't notice. I was lecturing and said the word "alternative." Since my contact list has my auto mechanic, a company called "Auto Alternative," the phone automatically dialed him! This happened about four times, each time some word I said triggered a different number being dialed.

Imagine...you are a lawyer. You are having a confidential conversation with a client about a lawsuit. Unbeknownst to you, VC activates on your or your client's phone. You say the name of the other party and they happen to be in the contact list. The phone dials them, but you don't know it. They answer, and suddenly they are hearing your conversation, with a client, about them....

...this could be serious.

I just started experiencing this problem today while out for a run. I won't go into details, but yes, it is very annoying.

I have started another thread, not to rehash this topic, but to encourage people to click the user feedback link and ask Apple to either 1) disable holding down the Home button to activate Voice Control; and/or 2) disable Voice Control completely. (Apple does not officially read or respond to issues raised in this forum.)

The reason I started another thread is that if you reply to the thread after leaving feedback with Apple, we can keep track of how many people have actually complained about this issue.

If you'd like to join me in my effort, the thread is here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2650022&tstart=0

Please go to this thread, click the feedback link, leave feedback, and then reply to it saying that you have left feedback with Apple. Let's see how many people complain about this, and how soon Apple responds to it.

Thanks,

Well, someone at Apple reads at least some of these forums.

The new thread I started to have people submit feedback to Apple was deleted by the Apple Discussions Staff.

Nevertheless, as other users have suggested, if you want Apple to either 1) disable holding down the Home button to activate Voice Control; and/or 2) disable Voice Control completely, go to this link:

http://www.apple.com/feedback

and let them know.

In the meantime, two possible solutions:

1) get the Apple headphones replaced: http://www.apple.com/support/headphones/replacementprogram/

2) get the "Home" button repaired by Apple under warranty.

I am really frustrated with this voice control feature of iPhone 4. Everytime I plug in my earphone, the voice control pops up and plays music like crazy. Sometimes stop itself and sometimes 3x faster and stop again. What is all this?? I really don't understand! Please remove this voice control, I don't need this. Otherwise please put an option to switch it off!! I am afraid to use my earphone now! It's bugging me too much. Apple, pls respond/help! People, pls let me have your opinion about this issue.
