MacBook Air display go dark and requires a complete shutdown

My MacBook Air display goes dark, shaking my cursor doesn't revive the display and neither does opening and closing it. The only thing that works is a complete shutdown and restart. Anyone know why?

Have you tried pushing the power button to attempt to wake it up? I find this is necessary to wake up my laptop from time to time.

Does the display go dark while you are actively using the laptop? Or is the laptop going to sleep & you are unable to wake it? If the latter, then how long is the laptop asleep when this occurs?

Have you tried adjusting the screen brightness, just in case it somehow got turned down?

Yes, I've pushed the power button to attempt to wake it up.

The display does not go dark when I'm actively using the laptop. It happens when I step away to get something from the kitchen or change out the laundry. The laptop goes to sleep, and I have to hold the power down until the laptop shuts down, wait a couple minutes, and restart it. When it starts again, it asks me if I forgot my password. Fortunately on the same screen there's a prompt to restart. I click restart and it starts as normal.

I haven't tried adjusting the screen brightness. I'll give that a try. Thank you.
