How does Apple ID 2FA work if you have only one Apple device (iPhone)?

My wife has only 1 Apple device ... her iPhone. We want to set up 2FA for her Apple ID. How does Apple ID 2FA work when you have only 1 Apple device?

The main article in Security and Your Apple Account says the following:

Protect your account with two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication is designed to make sure that you're the only person who can access your Apple Account, even if someone else knows your password. When you sign in to your Apple Account for the first time on a new device, that device asks for the verification code that is displayed automatically on your trusted devices.

My wife has only 1 device ... so if/when she signs in on her iPhone, wouldn't the code only be displayed on her iPhone? How is that 2FA when the code shows up on the same device? Isn't the point that the code should show up on some other device, not her iPhone? But there isn't another device.

I understand how it applies when logging into iCloud via the web, that the code would be sent to the iPhone (in that case the iPhone is the 2nd device) ... but my question is about how 2FA works with the Apple ID on the iPhone. There's something here that I do not understand.

There are various options including using a regular telephone, or a recovery contact. Read the support article: https://support.apple.com/102606

A code is sent automatically first to your trusted devices (some other Apple computer or Apple mobile device signed in with your account). If you have a trusted device running iOS11 (or iPadOS) and later, macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and later, or watchOS 4 and later, the verification code is displayed automatically on your trusted devices.

If you don’t have a trusted device handy, you can choose to have a verification code sent to your trusted phone number as a text message or phone call.

1. Select “Didn’t Get a Code?” or “Can’t get to your devices?” on the verification code screen.

2. Choose a telephone number for where to receive a code.

3. You'll get a text message or phone call from Apple with your verification code. This text message might include an additional domain validation line. This line includes the @ symbol, the website name, and your code (for example: @icloud.com #123456 %apple.com).

4. Enter the code on your other device to complete sign in.

It is a good idea to have more than one trusted number.

On the iPhone proper, this would only occur if she were to disconnect her Apple account on the device and reconnect it. In which case, I believe she would receive an SMS to her trusted phone number with the code.

Unfortunately, I cannot confirm the above as I have several Apple devices. In any case, knowing that you have 2 weeks to cancel 2FA (Manage two-factor authentication for your Apple ID from iPod touch), you could verify that and if any issues arise, just cancel it.
