How to Fix macOS Dictation Breaking Every Time You Reconnect Your Dock

This one was a real pain-in-the-butt for me, and now no more!

If you use an external docking station with a Mac and a USB microphone, you've probably hit this: unplug, replug, and suddenly dictation stops working. The mic is fine — it works in Zoom, in browser tabs, everywhere — but macOS dictation is dead.

The fix is one terminal command. Here's how to make it a one-keystroke shortcut so you never think about it again.

For reference, I have Macbook Pro M4 and Shure MV7+ mic but this should work in general.

Fix macOS Dictation After Dock Reconnect

  1. Open Shortcuts app → click + → name it "Fix Dictation"
  2. Add "Run Shell Script" action → paste: echo YOUR_PASSWORD | sudo -S killall coreaudiod
  3. Replace YOUR_PASSWORD with your Mac login password
  4. Set Shell: zsh, Input: Input, Pass Input: to stdin
  5. Add "Show Notification" action → title: "Dictation Reset"
  6. Click the (i) button → Add Keyboard Shortcut → assign your combo
  7. Test: reconnect dock → confirm dictation breaks → hit shortcut → test dictation

Note that your password will be exposed in the Shortcut with this method. Since I never go in there and no one in my life knows how to get in there or access my laptop, I am not worried about this. There is a way to bypass the password - ask AI how to help :)

One important note on mic settings

If dictation keeps losing your mic after reboots or reconnects, make sure your mic is selected in the right place. macOS has two separate mic settings that don't sync:

  • System Settings → Sound — controls input for most apps
  • System Settings → Accessibility → Dictation — controls input for dictation specifically

Set your mic in both. Most people only set it in Sound and wonder why dictation keeps reverting.

Total setup time: about 5 minutes. After that, one keystroke fixes it every time.
