My husband has an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017). A couple of years ago he upgraded the OS to Catalina 10.15.7.
Yesterday an uninvited prompt from Apple appeared on screen inviting him to upgrade to Ventura 13.7.8, which is a jump ahead of 3 OS’s.
Would this be a wise/safe move to make? In the past, we’ve both had bad experiences with upgrading OS’s.

Yes, it is 'safe' to upgrade from Catalina to Ventura if, as posted by our friend @den.thed, the iMac is healthy and has enough free space.
I will add that you would be wise to make sure you have a current backup of any stuff on the computer that is important to you before you upgrade. Always. Just in case.
It should not be a problem, if the iMac is healthy and has somewhere around 100GB of free disk space.
Other things that will cause problems, are third-party Anti Virus and Cleaning software.
Third-party App's may require updates and MS Word may require a new version.
Before upgrading make sure you remove all "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac and their support files?
Those files are not needed by a Mac and only cause problems with system and application performance.
Ok thanks for your help. So I may need to update some apps after upgrading to Ventura . Is it ok to jump over any Mac OS versions when upgrading? I thought you need to upgrade to the next version then upgrade to the version after that and upgrade one by one rather than jumping over to a version up the line ?
