Extended delays resetting Apple ID password for iPhone

I am trying to assist a 90 year old woman reset her Apple account password. She only uses it for her iPhone. Her phone has been getting so much spam text, emails, calls and everything else you can think of. I wanted to download an app to see if there is anything we can clean up off of her phone but she does not know her password. We have been trying to reset her password for two weeks. We keep getting pushed off... wait 24 hours, wait 40 mins, and now it is wait 6 days. This is getting really old and I can not seem to find a way to contact anyone to help. She just wants her phone to go back to before all of this was happening. She is about ready to trade her phone in for a Samsung and atleast have options to control her phone a bit more again. Her current icloud account is useless.

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 26

Account recovery is an automated process. Apple support cannot assist in making the process faster or bypassing it. It is also a two phase process once started. Phase 1 is the evaluation period, usually 24-72 hours. This phase says Apple is evaluating your info and you’ll get emailed an update after the posted time is over (people mistakenly think it means they’ll be able to reset the password immediately after this first phase.)

Once phase 1 is done it enters phase 2 where https://iforgot.apple.com/ will give you the final amount of days (can be weeks) you’ll wait. On that final day you’ll get a text/call, follow that text/call immediately. If you don’t receive the text or call, once the period specified in the original email is over, you can still go directly to apple.com/recover. Follow the instructions to regain access to your Apple Account.

During the wait period make sure you are carefully following “After you start account recovery“ at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204921 or you will cancel the recovery process.

  • “If you started your account recovery in Settings, System Settings, or the Apple Support app, you can continue to use that specific device during the account recovery period.
  • Regardless of how you started the account recovery request, you should turn off all other devices that are currently signed in with your Apple Account until account recovery is complete. If your Apple Account is in use during your request, your account recovery will be cancelled automatically.
  • If you started your account recovery request with iforgot.apple.com through your device’s browser, you should avoid using that device during this period. If possible, turn that device off. Using that device might cancel account recovery. "

At what stage in which process is she presently? The password reset process, or has this rolled over to account recovery?

This Apple article has instructions for what to do if you have forgotten your Apple account password, or the system does not recognize the one you remember —> https://support.apple.com/HT201487 or go directly to this link —> http://iforgot.apple.com/

If you don't receive your verification or reset email, read this Apple Support article: https://support.apple.com/HT201455

"When you make certain updates to your Apple ID, we’ll send you an email to help you complete the update. For example, you might have reset your password, reset your security questions, or added a new email address to your account." Also check your junk mail.

If you find you can’t sign in, reset your password, or receive verification codes, you can request account recovery (read this support article: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT204921 ) to regain access to your account. Account recovery might take a few days or longer, depending on the specific account information you can provide to verify your identity. This is a multi-step process. More detail in —> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255401538?answerId=260044580022#260044580022 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255733423

No account recovery phone call or text:

1) Read the article: How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password = https://support.apple.com/118574

Did you use other equipment while the request was being processed? Note the two sections about how using devices while using Account Recovery may result in the request being cancelled automatically.

2) If the request was not canceled but you did not receive a message by the time anticipated, go directly to https://apple.com/recover Follow the directions to regain account access.

E.g.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/256208323

Doesn’t have old telephone and recovery link is being sent to an address to which the person does not have access.

This page has telephone numbers for contacting Apple for support and service ➞ https://support.apple.com/106932

If you are signed into this forum using the same Apple Account then your browser may be configured to automatically enter your password. You should be able to view stored passwords in your browser's preferences/settings.

She I believe is in the account recovery. I have been using my phone or computer to try and complete all the tasks. I tried on hers directly but kept getting circled back to forgot password when I would go back to her text messages for her code. So I found it is easier to just use the iforgot site. Overall we have been in account recovery/ forgot password cycle for two weeks now.
