I find it very frustrating that I cannot keep my files in the Numbers app sorted by name. I put an Asterix in front of the names of those files I use often and want them to be at the top of the list and yet every time I go back in it is sorted by date. Why can’t I make sorting by name permanent?
Am I am missing something? (this applies to my use of Numbers on my iPad by the way)

I believe it's a bug/oversight as I see the same on my end (iPadOS 26.3.1.) I even tried to tap View Options, change the sort order there but it reverts too to Date once I reopen Numbers.

Yes, the Product Feedback link I gave you is the official way of reporting issues. Apple does monitor the submissions. It may take a few versions for the issue to be fixed, perhaps more quickly if a lot of users mention the same issue.
For instance, I submitted a bug report back for iPadOS 26.0 (I'm sure other users did too) and it got fixed in iPadOS 26.3.0 or 26.3.1 (I'm not sure.)
My issue was with iPadOS proper which has its own development teams at Apple. A bug report for Numbers will be handled by other Apple teams and it may be corrected in a different time frame.
Does Apple monitor this stuff? Is there a way to advise them of this bug?
