This happened once on an iMac and the fix was sticking a credit card in the crack between hinge and edge of case. It was so long ago that I can't remember if it released a lever or what. Yes, with the Thunderbolt Display, a credit card is used to lock the display's stand so that the screws can be accessed to remove the stand.

I have rarely reinstalled a stand so I'm not sure whether you just need to push the stand a little bit further to release it, or if you must insert a credit card into the gap/"slot" to trigger the latching mechanism to release. If it does require a credit card, then it will also require pushing the stand a bit further to release it.

I was trying to located instructions yesterday, but ran out of time since I suspected this is the model/type you had. The instructions for the older iMacs would be the same in terms of locking & releasing the stand to normal position. I haven't had time to search today.

When inserting the credit card, you should feel the trigger plate. It can take a bit of pressure with the credit card to move it a bit. It isn't always easy especially if it has been utilized before.

I'm surprised the display can end up like this just from circumstance.

Edit: Here is an old Apple Service Guide for a 2010 iMac where the procedure to remove & reinstall the stand is show (Take Apart --> Stand ...page 248-251....reattaching is pages 250-251:

I was close on the instructions. According to Apple with the display face down you push down on the stand a bit, insert the credit card against the trigger plate to release the latch & lift the stand up a couple of inches.

Since no one has provided a magic solution, I will add what I was able to find out:

There are several listings for the stand-only for that exact display on US eBay. Some of these show pictures of the leg alone or the leg with hinge attached. I am not suggesting you BUY, I am suggesting you look at as many pictures as you can find, to understand that leg better.

The solid aluminum leg itself is screwed to the hinge assembly with six or eight screws across its width. It is not clear whether those screws can be reached from up under the leg from outside the case.

Less useful:

There's also a tear-down of this display on a fixit site (direct links to which are often removed from here, because they can be dangerous for novice repairers). Careful examination of the pictures shows that the hinge mechanism appears to be screwed to the case from the inside, with three screws on each side spaced over a wide area up and down the case adjacent to the leg entry point.

--------

So if your leg will not move away from the body of the enclosure, the hinge is likely messed up, and may need to be completely disassembled and repaired/replaced. The procedure for opening starts with using suction cups to remove the display assembly. Not my idea of a good time.

If instead, the problem is the leg moves, but the display will not stand up straight, the problem is likely that the solid aluminum leg is physically bent. The solution for that problem is to bend the leg back until the unit stands up straight by itself.

Which exact display is this?

Unfortunately Apple is terrible about naming their products because there have now been two different types of "Studio Displays" as mentioned in the title of this thread.....one current from 2022+ and another way back in the early/mid 2000's which was white/clear.

Or is it a Cinema Display as mentioned in the body of your post? If a Cinema Display, then exactly which one since there were at least two different physical types.

It might help if you can provide the "Axxxx" number which will either appear on the back of the display or on the bottom of its stand.

Any idea how the display got into this way?

I remember I was told at the time that removing the 8 screws was not the path.
