New iPhone 17 maximum battery capacity at 99

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a new iPhone 17 (base model) and I noticed something about the battery health that I’m not sure is normal.

In the Battery Health section it already shows 99% maximum capacity, even though the phone is very new. Here are the details:

- Battery Health: Normal

- Maximum Capacity: 99%

- Cycle Count: 84

- Manufacture Date: September 2025

- First Use: December 2025

The phone works fine and there are no warning messages, but I’m a bit concerned that the battery dropped to 99% so quickly on a relatively new device.

Is this normal behavior for newer iPhones, or should I be worried about the battery health dropping this early?

Thanks for any advice!

99% Maximum Capacity would be perfectly normal and expected at this point, if the phone was placed into service 3+ months ago.

As a rough average, you can expect the Max Cap to decline at about 1% for every 2 months of operation.

So, after 6 months.....sometime in June....the Max Cap will be in the 97% range.

Keep in mind that averages are just that.....averages. Battery decline is not linear. The battery might go 2 months or more and not decline at all, then drop 2 or even 3% the following month. Again.....this is normal.

At 3+ years, it will be time to start watching things more closely. The battery will need to be replaced when the Max Cap drops under 80%.

No need to babysit the battery.....or watch the battery settings all the time. It will do what it will do.

Please read the part where I said that battery decline is not linear or exact. Batteries are chemical devices.

I can assure you though that after 12 months, the battery will be in the 93-95% range, and you will need to replace the battery in 3+ years.

It won't help if you are watching the battery all the time, but it will make you nervous when there is no need to be.
