Sign out / remove Activation Lock -> which phone data is deleted upon restore?

Hi all!

I am looking to do an activation unlock of my iPhone as the iCloud account my phone was logged in is blocked.

I wanted to make sure that I will not lose too much data when doing the activation unlock / phone reset. Esp. curious what will happen to all the apps that were installed with a different apple id and which one cannot be restored -> would these apps and the data in the apps not be recovered when I restore from the backup and log in my new apple id?

Thanks and l'm looking forward to hearing from you!

iPhone 13, iOS 18

So if I do activation unlock and chose to restore from backup -> would that still restore some data until it prompts to enter an Apple ID and I enter the new Apple Id then?

As I mentioned in my first reply......If you set up the phone with a new different Apple ID (Apple Account), your backup....made using another different Apple ID....will be of no use to you.

Or what would be the best process to recover as much data as possible?

From my first reply......Your phone....which you plan to set up with a new different Apple ID....will need to be set up again from scratch. You will have to manually download and install the apps that you want to use, set up a new email account, download music again, etc.

Since you will be setting up the phone again from scratch, there is no data to recover. I know it's disappointing, but all the data from your "old" Apple ID is in the backup that you cannot access because of the Activation Lock. The term "Catch 22" unfortunately comes to mind here.

If you set it up with a new account it will treat you like it has never seen you before. Since the old account is locked, anything done with that account is now also locked. You are having to start just like you never owned an iPhone previously. My concern—like Servant of Cats—is if you restore it from the locked account's backup you will then be back to square one with a locked device.

Not sure that I am following what you are asking. Your backup was made with your "old" Apple ID (now called Apple Account)....correct? That account is locked.

You don't really have an Apple__Problem, you have an problem with your former Apple ID.

Thanks @limnos - I know but more wondering how the backup works when restoring with my new apple id -> is some data like apps that were linked to my old, deleted Apple ID still restored with the backup from my Mac or is only that restored, that is linked to the new apple id that I will set up with the restoration process?

The bigger question might be – if you restore a backup made to your computer, at a time when the phone was registered to the now-blocked Apple ID, will that re-register the phone with that Apple ID?

If it would, then by trying to restore that backup, it sounds like you'd be jumping out of the frying pan and back into the "Activation Locked to a blocked Apple ID" fire.

Thanks @Bob, this is helpful. I was assuming that when making an iPhone backup while still being "logged in" in the old Apple ID (i.e. before activation unlock), it would still allow me to keep all of the information (local photos. etc) while just removing the data stored in iCloud before.

I do not think I could "re-register" as the old Apple Account is blocked so I could not sign in again there. I was hoping that it would restore my local data from the Mac backup and allow me to sign in with the new Apple Account. Is that not the case?

I do not know what would happen, for sure – and I do not intend to get my Apple Account blocked, and then have to start over again with another one, to find out.

Do you mean the email address is blocked, or your Apple Account is blocked? If it’s just the email address you can change that and keep the same account, but with a different email address:Change your Apple Account (Apple ID) primary email address

Sign out / remove Activation Lock -> which phone data is deleted upon restore?
