MacBook Air and iPhone 17 Pro Max mirroring connection loop

I can't use the Mirror function between MacBook Air and 17 Pro Max. When I press the Mirroring icon on my MacBook Air a msg appears on the Mac to close the iPhone to connect. I close the phone, then a msg appears to open the phone to connect. Can anyone else. Both devices have updated OS's.
