H&R Block Mac version of tax software doesn't work for state taxes.

H&R Block software doesn't work for state taxes.

  1. I purchased the Deluxe + State version of the program.
  2. After I finished my federal taxes and started the process to download the state I needed to enter my credit card data to purchase the state program. (Does the Deluxe + State price NOT include the state? Not worth my time to check.)
  3. After going through the process, the program looped back to the beginning of the state process, including for asking for my credit card information again.
  4. I found that the program had downloaded a file to the folder: Macintosh/Users/(me)/Library/Application Support/H&RBlock/2025/Completed Updates.
  5. The file was named AZ.bin. (Is this for Windows?). The folder also contains a number of files named HRBlock_(some id ending in X)_UPD.dmg. .dmg files are Mac files.
  6. On the H&R Block web site, I was able to find and download the file HRBlock_2025_Arizona_Updater_A.dmg. When I run this file it returns the error "The AZ.TCstate25 program cannot be found".
  7. Of course, H&R's "help" was of no use. The "Tech Support" button doesn't even work. There is no obvious way to contact a human.

My conclusion is that H&R Block is not committed to Mac and I suggest not using the software. I've already done my state taxes manually and I'm disputing the credit card charges, so I'm not expecting a solution. (Some years ago, I switched from Turbo Tax, because of lack of Mac support.) I'll be leaving H&R for next year. Any suggestions on tax software for Mac?

It appears that the "Deluxe + State" price includes preparation of returns for one state, something that would cost you $39.95 extra if you had just bought the "Basic" or plain "Deluxe" version.

However, if you want to e-file the State tax return that the program prepares for you, instead of printing the return and mailing it in on paper, you have to pay an extra fee for just about every state but New York.

Click on the tiny-print link "Fees for state & state e-file" right below the large "$70", and you'll see:

"After you complete your state tax return with the H&R Block state program, you will pay $19.95 per state (except NY) to e-file."
