Mac mini crashes due to WindowServer timeout

I have a Mac Mini that I only use via Helpwire remote software from my Windows machine. It has a HDMI cable plugged into it, but the other end of that HDMI cable goes into a switch because it's sharing a monitor with another computer. The switch is 99.99% of the time allowing the other computer to use that monitor. The switch is only there so I can view the Mac screen directly if I can't reach it via Helpwire.

I use Helpwire every workday, but around twice a week it says the Mac Mini is inaccessible. I flip the HDMI switch to see what's going on and the Mac is at the login prompt screen. After logging in it tells me it crashed and/or rebooted.

The error is:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffe0050fa7bc0): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from WindowServer (2 induced crashes) in 120 seconds

service returned not alive with context : is_alive_func returned unhealthy : WindowServer initialization not complete (post IOKitWaitQuiet)

How can I disable that watchdog? Or fool it into thinking the monitor is just fine. I want it to ignore this situation completely. I can understand why it's not pleased when it gets into that state, but rebooting doesn't solve anything. The machine shows no other sign of being in peril.

Would it be better if I just disconnected the HDMI cable completely?

UpGrading to macOS 26 Tahoe will not fix the current hardware configuration issue

Use an HDMI “dummy plug”

A headless HDMI adapter pretends to be a monitor and provides a stable EDID signal at all times

Makes macOS think a display is always connected

Allows WindowServer to initialize properly every time

Prevents the watchdog panic entirely

Look for a “HDMI dummy plug 4K” or “headless ghost display adapter”

There was a way to update Sequoia instead of upgrading to Tahoe, but that's a moot point now.

The dummy HDMI is a good first step to make the Mac mini think that there is a connected display.

Sadly some setup are crashing during full computer sleep mode which forces a restart on Wake.

As a test, turn On "Prevent automatic sleeping when display is off" and just leave the Mac mini On and Awake.

Things looking good now. After upgrading to Tahoe and more importantly adding the Dummy monitor HDMI dongle has solved my crashing problem.

I don't think HelpWire will know how to fix Mac issues, they only know about HelpWire itself. If the Mac is crashing and rebooting overnight when HelpWire isn't connected or in use they'll be in the dark.

It's definitely a Mac Mini not having a monitor and not being happy about it kind of issue.

I upgraded to Tahoe overnight. I didn't even know Sequoia was outdated, the Mac hadn't told me over the last few months. I only saw it when I went into some system setting where it told me I had updates.

So now I'll have a few days of finding out whether Tahoe solved my issues. From my googling around about my issue, it seems like some related issues always mentioned Sequoia.

Yeah I've got all the anti-sleep anti-display-off anti-screensaver settings set so that it's on permanently. I never sleep or shut down the machine. As I don't have a monitor plugged into it, there's no real reason to ever have anything turn the display off in any way.
