iPhone 17 Pro Max CarPlay audio dropouts/lag in BMW

Since switching to an iPhone 17 Pro Max, I’ve been experiencing an issue with CarPlay in my BMW 420 (iDrive 7). I’m using wireless CarPlay (as far as I know, this car doesn’t support a wired CarPlay connection).

While driving, I get very brief audio dropouts at random moments — whether I’m listening to music on Spotify or podcasts on YouTube. It sounds like there are communication interruptions with the head unit. I’ve also noticed slight lag at the same moments, for example when moving the map in Google Maps.

It’s extremely annoying, especially when listening to music. I didn’t have this issue on my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

I manage to record this issue. It can happen several times during one song:

Your iPhone 17's new Wi-Fi chip doesn't play nice with the Wi-Fi channel your BMW uses for wireless CarPlay. That's why the audio and map stutter at the same time — the connection blips for a split second.

Best fix: Use the BimmerCode app (~€30 plus a cheap OBD adapter) to change your car's 5GHz Wi-Fi channel from the factory default (channel 156) to "auto" or UNII-3. BMW owners with your exact problem say this basically eliminated the skipping.

Free things to try first:

  1. Update your iPhone to the latest iOS version
  2. Forget the car in your phone's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings, then re-pair CarPlay from scratch
  3. If you wear an Apple Watch, turn its Bluetooth off for one drive and see if the skips stop
  4. Delete the My BMW app and test

If nothing works, a modern wireless CarPlay adapter (like an Ottocast) is a reliable workaround — but try the channel change first, it's the fix that matches your problem best.

"I also own a 2023 BMW 4 Series and am experiencing the exact same issues: annoying micro-interruptions and audio skipping during music playback, whether using Apple Music or Spotify. It is now evident that there is an underlying incompatibility between the iPhone 17 and the infotainment systems of BMW vehicles from that production year. However, in the compatibility lists officially provided by Apple, these vehicles are expressly indicated as supported. I consider this to be an unfair and deceptive commercial practice, entirely unacceptable when perpetrated by a world-leading company.

For these reasons, acting in my professional capacity as an attorney, I am seriously evaluating the initiation of legal proceedings. This action would be aimed at obtaining a reduction in the smartphone's purchase price—given its lack of an essential, promised functionality—along with compensation for the damages suffered. I hope that this initiative may serve as a formal warning, compelling Apple to promptly resolve the issue, including by urging direct and joint intervention with the automotive manufacturers
