In Messages : You can send texts using cellular data (appear as green bubbles),

and

send iMessages over wi-fi (appear as blue bubbles)

You send every message in just the same way. (Which way they go depends whether Apple to Apple devices, or Apple to Android devices, are in use,) .

Apple support have an easy-to-follow set of steps in this linked article below:

(especially step 4)

See how to: Set up Messages on iPhone - Apple Support

Eg says: Turn on iMessage

  1. Go to the Settings app  on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Messages.
  3. Turn on iMessage.
  4. To select which of your phone numbers and email addresses you want to use with iMessage, tap Send & Receive, then choose from the available options below “You can receive iMessages to and reply from.”

If you can't choose the email address you want:

Go to the Contacts app, and make sure the email address is listed on your card.

If necessary you can: Edit contacts on iPhone - Apple Support

Hope this helps :-)
