iOS Storage Reporting Discrepancy and Quick Start Data Transfer Clarification

Hello,

I recently migrated from an older iPhone 14 pro to a new iPhone 17 pro using the side-by-side “Quick Start” transfer method, and had two questions I was hoping you could help clarify.

iPhone Storage Discrepancy (WhatsApp):

  1. On my old iPhone, WhatsApp showed approximately 15.37 GB within the app itself, but iPhone Storage reported about 23 GB. On my new iPhone, WhatsApp still shows 15.37 GB, but iPhone Storage reports only about 16.2 GB.
  2. Could you please explain what accounts for this difference between WhatsApp’s internal storage reporting and iOS storage reporting, and why the discrepancy reduced significantly after the transfer? Is it normal for a fresh restore to "optimize" the app database to this extent without any data loss?

Video Transfer Behavior:

  1. During setup, I used the Quick Start (device-to-device) transfer method. The two devices were next to each other for approximately 15 minutes at most during the process. Within WhatsApp, the “Include Videos” setting for iCloud backup was turned OFF. Despite this, all videos appear to have transferred quickly and are available locally (they play instantly even in Airplane Mode).
  2. Could you help me understand how these videos were transferred (and so quicly!) if they were not included in the WhatsApp iCloud backup?

I would appreciate any technical detail you can provide so I can better understand how data is handled across Quick Start transfers versus iCloud backups.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Atul

WhatsApp does not calculate storage the same way the phone does. It is also true for Android phones. WhatsApp does admit to the fact, but does not explain why that is the case and has done nothing to resolve the issue even though users have complained about it for years.

It's possible that there might be a difference in the storage usage noted by your WhatsApp app and iPhone. This is mainly because of the difference in the way WhatsApp calculates storage versus your iPhone.

And the same for Android:

The difference in using QuickStart and an iCloud backup for setup is that you can choose what data you want to include in an iCloud backup and QuickStart will transfer all data whether you have included it in an iCloud backup or not.

Apple doesn't own WhatsApp, and this is a user to user only forum. You're asking only other users about a product not owned by Apple at all. You seem to have gotten all the data migrated from your old phone to your new phone, which I assume is what you hoped to accomplish. But you'd need to contact WhatsApp directly for help on the storage questions you have.

Thanks for the response. I understand this may involve a third-party app, but the behavior I’m seeing—particularly the storage discrepancy and Quick Start transfer mechanics—seems closely tied to iOS-level storage accounting, not just WhatsApp.

Given how widely WhatsApp is used, understanding this interaction could benefit many users. I was also hoping this might reach someone with deep technical insight (I know there are some very knowledgeable and helpful folks there—though clearly not everyone...).

Appreciate any further clarification anyone can provide.
