AppleCare+ renewal / extension options for iPad not visible

How do I renew / extend AppleCare + on an iPad? I can't find the option anywhere, and Apple's Support was very unhelpful?

It only shows AppleCare One as an option. And paying the full AppleCare One price for a single device is a waste of money. Unless you know of a way to cover devices on both my main account and my son's minor account on the same AppleCare One plan, which is what I really want, but others say it can't be done.

As AppleCare+ was not purchased or not renewed within the available window, AppleCare One is your sole option.

And the AppleCare One support subscription cannot be shared across Apple Accounts.

Both lousy ideas.

Is Apple's reasoning that devices on minor accounts have higher claim rates, so they make them impossible to insure? Or do they hope to get rich off of minor's making unauthorized purchases on devices on parents' accounts?

Your annoyance is clear.

I did purchase AppleCare+, but it will expire in April. When is or was this window that you say I missed?

It doesn't make sense to me that a minor's account counts as separate from a parent's main account. So the only way I can extend coverage is to switch the iPad to my account, pay for AppleCare One, and allow my son to make unauthorized purchases since he's now using my adult account? Doesn't make any sense.

What is my best action at this point?

What happens if I switch his iPad to my main parent account, sign up for AppleCare One for that iPad and 2 other of my devices, and then switch his iPad back to his minor account? Will that work?

AppleCare One:

  • is your sole option for coverage for this iPad 10th gen, for as long as that is available, and while the iPad is functional.
  • is tied to the Apple Account.
  • cannot be transferred.

If this iPad is already failed, failing, or otherwise damaged, that’s not going to be covered.

But I’d be paying to cover 3 devices when it’s only covering 1 device since it’s on a minor account rather than my main account. Makes no sense. Especially since after a few months it would basically be the cost of the iPad. Is it intentional that having a device under a minor account makes it basically ineligible for coverage, or is it just a glitch in their system?

If the offer makes no sense to you, don’t buy it.

Or buy two more devices, and fill out the AppleCare One offer.

Or buy a replacement (“spare”) device with no coverage.

Or buy a new device and purchase AppleCare+ while that is available.

Whatever purchase (or not-purchase) makes the most sense to you, as this is entirely your choice.

But AppleCare One is what it is.

I already have multiple devices: I have another iPad, an iPhone, and an Apple Watch, but they are for me to use rather than my son, so they are on the main parent account, not the minor account.

In reality, I have 2 choices, neither of which are any good (I'm not considering either of your ideas involving buying extra iPads to be reasonable options).

  1. Go without coverage and hope that my son is more careful with his iPad in the future.
  2. Put the iPad back on the main parent account, and risk my son being able to purchase whatever he wants, and him losing everything he downloaded under his minor account. And also give him access to work contacts.

Both lousy ideas.

Settings > General > AppleCare will show status and availability, assuming a semi-recent iPadOS version.

The other option for coverage is AppleCare One, which can be added to devices in good condition up to four years from original purchase:
