Can't open/edit Word/Acrobat docs on managed iPad

Good morning,

I have a government managed iPad (A16). We use Company Portal to get our apps, and they automatically update. Every app on the iPad is currently running the latest version, and it has the latest version of software 26.3.1 (a).

I have tried everything I can, as well as my team can think of, to be able to open and edit documents in Word, or Acrobat. We can use QuickLook (preview) and that will allow us to capture signatures, but we cannot open documents in Word or Acrobat.

At one point, we were able to, and I cannot figure out what the difference is. We can create new documents, but almost everything we have is a govt template created in word with headers/footers or tables, etc, and we need to be able to use these documents.

I've emailed them to myself, and downloaded. I've tried iCloud Drive to drop them to the iPad. I've saved it from Files -> iCloud to Files -> On my iPad and that doesn't change anything either. At one point, there was a box in the top right corner of the documents in QuickLook that said "word" with an arrow. Or "acrobat" with an arrow but that disappeared and we can't figure out what's different.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm all ears.

One last final idea ... can you open/edit the documents in Apple's Pages? If that is not a good option, you have two choices as I see it.

  • See if your IT team has any suggestions. It being a government managed device may be complicating things. Or,
  • Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. Maybe they can come up with an idea?

So, no I have not tried to save a copy in Word, because I can't open it in Word at all. They're just documents that are created by myself on Word on my govt issued laptop, and we aren't having any issues opening them in Word on anything but the iPads.

The weird thing is it did work before, for about a day, then it was just "poof" gone and now they don't work at all.

I want to be clear about the issues I'm having here in case an Apple person comes along and has an answer. The first picture shows what it looked like when we first got the iPads, and we were downloading blank docs to our iCloud and then opening them on the iPad to save them. The second picture is what it looks like now. In the first there's a box with an arrow that says "Word" and in the second, that option is gone. Anyone know what would make this disappear?
