Apple Cash / Green Dot Payment Pending After Merchant Error – Advice Needed

I tried to pay a $378.53 citation using my Apple Cash virtual card. The merchant’s system split the transaction into two: $362.70 (citation) and $14.33 (service fee).

The Situation:

  • The $14.33 service fee was officially DECLINED.
  • The $362.70 is still PENDING and was deducted from my Apple Cash balance.
  • The merchant says they didn't receive anything and do not accept virtual/cash cards.
  • Apple Support sent me to Green Dot, who only offered a callback and no help.

Because the $362.70 is "pending," I can’t transfer it back to my bank to pay with a different card.

Has anyone had a pending Apple Cash charge stay "stuck" even after the related service fee was declined? How long did it take for Green Dot to release the hold so you could access your money again?

Only the merchant can remove a pending charge. When a transaction/payment is sent to the bank for verification the data first goes through the merchant’s credit card processor/gateway. Generally, the merchant can remove the pending charge on their end. If it’s not removed in 5 days, the credit card processor will remove the pending charge. The bank (Green Dot Bank) cannot remove a pending charge. Your best path forward is to contact the merchant and explain the situation and request they contact their credit card processor to remove the hold. If they can’t or won’t, you’ll need to wait the 5 days for the pending to lift.
