MacBook Pro: 'Close apps for update' message, no updates

Why do I keep getting a message to close apps before updating when there are no updates to install?

13-inch MacBook Pro, M1, 2020, Tahoe 26.3.1

Every morning when I wake up my laptop, I get a message saying that I need to close all apps before installing updates. I thought that meant my laptop tried to install an update the night before, but when I go to System Settings, it says my computer is up to date.

A security improvement was released a few days ago: version 26.3.1 (a). Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements to install it.

Hi K_SAVAGE,

No I don’t think anyone (besides Apple) knows why Apple implemented the Background Security Improvements this way. This is the very first background security improvement Apple released. It was previously handled as a Rapid Security Response, which was handled as a software update.

Apple perhaps tried to be consistent with the naming of settings categories (System Settings > Privacy & Security) and group security-related settings there?

Do you know the reasoning behind hiding that improvement in .....>Privacy & Security rather than just listing it as an optional update on the ...>Software Update section where every other update displays? This seems cryptic and nonsensical to me. Why would Apple deliberately make it a challenge to find this improvement to install it with the only clue being the ridiculous notification that leads nowhere when clicking on details?

Thanks for your response. I find it rather tedious, now, to have to look in two different places in order to validate that all updates have been applied. I also find it a bit annoying that when I click on the Details link that absolutely no details about this "security improvement" are available. It's typically the same with general OS updates here recently. Apple needs to be a little more transparent with their customers, in my honest opinion. We have all spent a small fortune on desktop units of various models, Macbooks, iPads and iPhones so we should expect better from Apple.

Oh, well, ranting helps nothing so I'll let it be. Thanks, again.
