Apple Pay not working at checkout

My Apple Pay isn’t working when I go to check out. The “hold near reader” symbol comes up but it doesn’t scan or make the payment sound (it’s like it doesn’t recognise the eftpos machine). The card has worked in the past it just randomly stopped working a couple weeks ago.

There really are only 3 possibilities:

POS terminal does not support it or inoperable.
Phone not placed in the exact area of the terminal where NFC is recognized. Usually there will be a symbol on the terminal to show that location. The top portion of the back of the phone is what you want to tap.
Failure on your phone. Apple will offer diagnostics for free to verify it is working correctly on your phone.
