Locked out of iPad by Voice Over.

Help PLEASE. I am now locked out of my iPad Mini. It has the latest software version. It has worked without problems until now. A half-hour ago, I activated Voice Over. I began to view the tutorial. I tried to follow the first voiced instructions to slide a finger from left to right. The voice simply repeated the instruction itself no matter what I tried. I finally gave up and forced the iPad to turn off, but I could not slide the OFF button. It finally shut off when I double tapped the OFF button. Now upon power-up Voice Over is still active. It displays the time and the voice states the time too. However I can't get to the unlock screen. Finger taps/slides are ignored. Tapping the Accessibility button at the top edge of the screen is being ignored.

I tried the procedure of quickly pressing the volume up button followed by the volume down button and then pressing and holding the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears. The result of that is absolutely no change. On power-up, the iPad only displays and voices the time. I hope someone knows whatever it takes to unlock the iPad and shut Voice Over off. Thanks!

Hello once more~ Try tapping each number once to select it and then double-tap to enter it.

Expanding upon Katana-San's advice...

  • Use Siri: If enabled, say, "Hey Siri, turn off VoiceOver". If necessary, connect the iPad to its Power Adapter to enable Siri voice commands.

  • Manual Turn Off: Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver and toggle it off. Note: You must tap once to select, then double-tap to activate buttons.

  • Unlock Screen: If stuck on the lock screen, tap the passcode numbers once, then double-tap them to enter.

  • Force Restart the iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button. Do not release the top button until...
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

  1. Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. Do not release either button until...
  2. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

Thank you so much! Sorry it took me awhile - I haven't used this Community Support capability previously.

I am now able to get past the lock screen by tapping each unlock number twice. The 2nd tap gets the number "entered" in the displayed sequence and I finally moved off the unlock screen. Now I'm can get to the home screen. There is a white pop-up window about Voice Over wanting to send notifications. I was able to tap other icons and the pop-up disappeared.

I am able to get to the Settings screen. When I select Accessibility, Voice Control is presented on the right half screen. But there is now no button with a lable to turn Voice Control on or off. What is displayed is Voice Control at the top edge. Next lower button is Set Up Voice Control. The next button down is Open Voice Control Tutorial. The remaining buttons seem to be no help: Lanlguage, Commands, Vocabulary, Show Confirmation, Play Sound, Show Hints, Overlay (none).

Double tapping an item appears to select it, but I still don't see a way to deactivate Voice Over. Selecting Setup Voice Control or Open Voice Control Setup only displays a single pop-up with a Continue button. Unfortunately double tapping Continue does nothing (except I hear the Voice). I can only double tap the X at the top left of the pop-up to remove the pop-up.

Selecting the other buttons on the Voice Control screen doesn't reveal any way to deactivate Voice Control.

I sure do hope there any other way to shut off Voice Control. I certainly don't want to be stuck with this select, then double tap to activate method the rest of my life.

Thanks again for your help!

Thank you for trying to help. I have tried asking Siri to turn off Voice Over. It does not respond in any way.

I never activated the fingerprint security so I can't use that to unlock my iPad. However, I can now drag up from the power-on screen to get to the unlock screen. But pressing the unlock buttons places circles around the numbers and the Voice to states each one. However the screen does not change. I'm stuck on the unlock screen.

Hope there are some other options.
