Similar to system software updates, Background System Security Improvement updates have a phased rollout. You can either manually install the updates when they are released, or allow your device to automatically install the update when the phased auto-rollout begins in your region.

Automatic rollout is intentionally staggered by Apple for two principal reasons:

1) Early adopters who choose to manually install the update when released tend to identify significant unanticipated issues if they should occur. Identified issues, should they occur, may delay the automatic rollout while early issues are resolved.

2) Phased rollout by region and device ensures that Apple's regional update servers are not overwhelmed by ten of millions of devices simultaneously requesting update. While there is significant capacity across Apple's regional server infrastructure, there are still limits to the number of simultaneous connection requests that can be supported at any particular point in time.

Your iPad and iPhone will automatically install the Background Security Improvement update, at the appropriate time, if configured to do so - or you can install manually on-demand:

Settings > Privacy & Security > [Security] Background Security Improvements > Automatically Install - set to ON

Tap the Install link to manually install an available update should you choose to do so.

Since release of the iOS/iPadOS 26.3.1(a) Background Security Update has been slowly deployed to devices that are configured to automatically download and install the update. As a point of observation, other than an intentional manual installation on just one of my eligible devices when the update was first released, I have intentionally allowed others to automatically update - each receiving the update on different days - the last of which occurred today 22 March.

The way it arrived , as a different message, on only one of our devices, had me worried. But since then it has arrived on other devices, each in a different way.

I believe that there are more than a billion iPhones and iPads in use in the world. If all of those devices attempted to grab updates from the same server, at the same time, the server and the parts of the Internet near it would be massively overloaded. So I assume that there are many geographically-distributed servers, and that Apple might stagger automatic updates over a couple of days as another way of managing peak server and network load.
