That is correct. When I checked the Instagram listing in the App Store just now, I saw

The "You must update …" part is a generic message. It doesn't tell you whether "updating" involves "updating your current phone" or "replacing it with a newer phone."

If you had an iPhone 11 that had never been allowed to update, and that was still running iOS 13.0, you would be able to update it, and install Instagram. Updating from iOS 13.0 to iOS 27.* might require help from a computer. But in the case of an iPhone 11, you actually could update the phone.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus cannot run iOS 16 or higher. If you want to download and use the Instagram app, your only option is to get another phone.

Perhaps Apple could word the App Store error message better, so that on an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, the second line read "Your phone cannot update this far. To download and use this app, you need a newer phone." That might make things a bit clearer – but it would not change the bottom line.

You cannot install the current Instagram app on an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus.

Maybe you can access the Instagram Web site on your iPhone 7 or 7 Plus - but there are no guarantees.

Your iPhone lacks the hardware required to install and operate iOS 16 and above. Instagram requires iOS 16 or above and therefore cannot be installed on your device. You’ll need a newer iPhone in order to install Instagram.

Uninstalling Newer Software on an Older Device:

Your iPhone needs to meed the minimum system requirements for your software and, apparently, it does not. iPhone 6 series is incomparable with iOS 17. So, either downgrade the software to a compatible version, or use a compatible iPhone.l, taking this as a good reason to upgrade.

• The OP asked about an iPhone 7 (which can update to iOS 15), not an iPhone 6 (which can update to iOS 12).
• Instagram currently requires iOS 16.3 or later – not iOS 17.
• Downgrading a compatible version of Instagram will not be an option unless the OP previously downloaded it, the previous version shows up in the Purchased tab of the App Store, and the developer has not made changes to the service that would render the old version of the app useless for accessing the service. That's a lot of "ifs".

The bottom line is still that the OP cannot install the current version of Instagram on their iPhone 7. They may or may not be able to access the Instagram service on the Web, using the old version of Safari (Safari 15) that runs on that iPhone.

While an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X could run current version of the Instagram app, purchasing one of those phones would be a bad idea because Meta could raise system requirements at any time – putting the OP right back into the same boat.

Let's make this simple, your iPhone 7's max update is iOS 15 and Instagram requires atleast iOS 16.3, that's because your iPhone 7 cannot handle iOS 16 and above, If Meta still supports older versions of instagram, you may install it and it may ask you if you want an older version of instagram (Should've downloaded it before the requirement = If downloaded then it should display as a cloud icon on the App Store if not installed), or still have had it downloaded before Meta enforced the iOS 16 requirement, Otherwise you can't.

If you bothered to read the thread, you wouldn't have wasted your time asking a question which has already been answered, which is you CANNOT install Instagram on your iPhone, because it is too old and it does not support the iOS version your phone is limited to.

If your issue is the same as the OP, all you can do is purchase a device that Meta has allowed their app to be installed. It is the Developer of apps that chooses the OS version they want to continue to support and if you device is not capable of that OS version, you will have to purchase one that is.

If you have an iPhone 7.....Meta....developers of Instagram.....do not want their app to run on an old iPhone. So, they will not let you install Instagram on an iPhone 7.

This decision was made by Meta.....not by Apple.

If you want to run Instagram....Meta is forcing you to buy a newer iPhone.

Who said anything about downgrading the iOS?

Downgrade the Instagram software version.

That's exactly what I asked you and would like to know how that can be done. Instagram doesn't support anything lower than iOS 17, so how would someone do what you suggested? I actually looked this up after you posted (something you probably should have done) and found exactly what I expected to find, which is Instagram cannot be rolled down to be compatible with a lower iOS version than iOS 17.

You cannot. Please read the other posts in this thread to understand why.

You won't be able to install Instagram on your iPhone 7.

Why? Instagram requires an iPhone 8 or higher model. Apple is not involved with decisions made by Instagram.

Since you will be looking for a new phone, it would make sense to look at an iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 to insure that you will be able to run updates for the next 7-8 years.
