iPad Safari bookmarks and history gone

I turn off wi-fi and shut down my iPad at night. This morning I turned it on and found safari had no history or bookmarks. Where did they go? can I get this data back?I looked at settings/apps/safari/advanced/website data and there’s tons of website data. So, I presume it's not like Safari was deleted and re-installed somehow.
